How To Install Rv Underbody Led Lights

After a lot of research and reading reviews of different LED strips, I finally found one that I thought would be a good fit for our RV. It is waterproof and has a layer of silicone that covers the entire light strip. After I made an extension cord to run from one side of the RV to the other, it caused a voltage drop resulting in the driver side light strip not having the same light pattern as the passenger side. I’m in the process of doing another way that would require an extra set of LEDs. Basically, I would daisychain all three together, that’s a supported setup. To get to the driver’s side, I’ll use one of the channels below that goes through the RV located just to the right of the water pump compartment door. That means we waste about 10 feet of LEDs, but I’m not sure how to do it any other way and still use a single power source, LED driver and remote.

  • 2 or 3 sets of LED strips
  • A wide range of 8 inch zip ties
  • A couple of adhesive wire clips to organize the wires inside the compartment where the receiver and power supply will reside
  • Silicone to seal a 1/2 hole through which the wire will go

Tools you will need:

  • A drill bit with a 1/2″ drill bit. A slightly larger drill is even better, but you can widen the hole enough with a 1/2 drill bit.
  • A dull butter knife or other sturdy but thin tool

  • Check the LED strip to make sure it’s not defective, but unroll it first. Otherwise, it may be too hot.
  • Tape the LED on the ground below where it will go towards the passenger.
  • Using a couple of zip ties, attach the light strip’s power connector to the black metal square tube that runs from front to back. Now just attach the first part of the light strip to the front part of that black metal tube under the front compartment where the power supply will be. This will allow you to ensure full access to the power connector that you will be drilling soon.
  • Now drill a half-inch hole along the bottom edge of the front wall of the compartment about 13 inches from the outer wall of the RV, so that the power connector of the LED strip can run through the hole. You’ll have to widen the hole a bit by shaking the drill around since the connector is slightly larger than 1/2″ (or use a slightly larger drill bit.   • Now use some double-sided tape to stick the LED Controller to the side of the bay. I used one of the adhesive wire clips to hold the cord to the side and around the cord from the front edge of the compartment to the top shelf where the outlet is located.   • At this point, you’ll want to tie the whole LED strip to the black rail that runs the length of the RV side. This is where a butter knife comes in handy. When you’re zipping the light strip to the black rail, you’ll have to pry the black bottom up very slightly to make room for the zip fastener. Only a minimal amount is needed so you don’t have to worry about damaging the undercarriage. Habits on the road
  • I put the zip ties about 8 inches at a time, and I always do the zip ties, I go over the empty white part of the LED strip so I don’t have to worry about crunching a piece of the circuit. I plan to go back and add some silicone pads to keep the light from sagging between the laces.
  • When you’re about 5 feet from where you started, there’s a channel that lets you run another LED strip to the driver’s side. I ordered a third light strip because several feet of the second light strip would be wasted going towards the driver. Use the adhesive wire clips to secure the wire to the ceiling of the metal channel extending the width of the RV.
  • You will now attach the LED strip on the driver’s side to the black railing as before.
  • You should now use silicone to seal the hole you drilled earlier.
  • At this point, you should be finished and able to turn on the power to test the lights. Since you have to buy two or three sets of LEDs to do this, you have some extra parts in case something breaks or fails. Habits on the road

    The next thing I would look at is connecting the LED power supply to a digital timer so that the lights automatically come on at a certain time and off at a certain time. lights come on from inside the RV as you pull into the campground at night (assuming the generator is running or the inverter… I’m not sure if the inverter will power this outlet). This will really help increase visibility when trying to line up an RV with gadgets etc at night. I hope this is helpful! I also hope the LED kit I have chosen will last a long time.
