How Do I Stop Stripping Screws?

Image by bradleypjohnson / Flickr It can feel embarrassing, embarrassing, or maybe just weird, when you remove a screw during a repair. The screwdriver is such a simple tool, they include it in the toy tool belt for ages 3 and up. Also, since a screwdriver is so simple, probably no one – including you – takes the time to learn how to actually use it, and what to do when it feels wrong. A screw with a small indentation instead of a separate groove, each twist spitting out small pieces of metal instead of tightening or loosening. Not only do we disassemble teardrop devices and repair guides, but we design and sell driving kits. We put a lot of thought into torque, grip and escape. One person in particular, Product Engineer Andrew Goldheart, offered some thoughts on how to avoid screw slipping. An important technique, as you’ll see below, is to understand the relationship between driver and screw, and what happens when you put your muscles into that combination. stripped a screw, along with some more general tips on how to use a screwdriver properly. Today, though? We’re going to dive into some twisty laces.

What is happening when you unscrew a screw?

If the screw gets stuck and you then apply pressure to turn the screw (torque), your driver bit/head can slide up and out of the screw socket (flat head / Phillips / Torx / whatever) whatever shape is cut into the tip of the screwdriver). When that happens, all the pressure you’re putting on — both downward and in rotation — is now applied to the edges of the recess. Ways and breaks are made smooth. Now the driver/bit has an even less distinct indent to lock in, so it slides more, more smoothly, continuously. You now have a stripped screw. If you’re using a drill, it could happen before you know it. This is why some manuals and assembly instructions explicitly ask you to use the hand controller instead of the drill — it’s not just because they want to exercise your bravery. If you experience resistance when screwing in, it could be a screw in the wrong thread, a screw that is threaded through, or a blockage that needs to be removed. One way to fix this is to remove the screw, drive it slightly counter-clockwise to secure a flat position, then drive it back clockwise.

How can you prevent screw stripping

Goldheart suggests these important methods to prevent screw stripping. They are especially suitable if you are working inside smaller electronic devices, like smartphones. Most contact between driver/bit and screw. To do that:

  • Use the correct bit size. Too small and you float inside the niche; too big and you don’t get the best bounce. More exposure means more area your powerful bounce is distributed, which means less pressure on concave edges.
  • Hold your driver perpendicular to the screw head. It’s easy to not even realize your driver is working at some angle, especially if you’re working through a set of screws arranged around the edges of something, for example like battery or logic board.
  • Make sure that the tip is fully seated in the screw head socket before you start spinning. The first moment of loosening a screw is when you need the most torque, and therefore contact. If your driver starts to slip at the beginning, try a different bit size.

Stay calm, even at the start. Loosening the screw – overcoming the initial tightness and making it spin – requires the most torque, and that’s when you’re likely to unscrew the screw. If you feel your driver backing out of the dent when you first start to turn, check that your bit is not too big or too small, reset it to the indent and increase downforce. Be especially cautious with Phillips or three-point screws, as their point configurations are more likely to push the driver head out of the recess.Don’t push too hard at any point. You want some pressure on the screw head to keep the bit in place. However, if you press too hard and the driver pops out of the socket, you are helping to remove it. Start with light force, just enough to fully hold the position, then rotate. You’ll be less likely to unscrew a screw if you start with light force and work from there. This is especially true of the small screws in the iPhone, which are factory-tightened to a very low torque limit. Think watchmakers, not tire shops.
