why do they put ice in urinals

Read more: Why it’s revealed You may not know this, but often the men’s urinals in men’s restrooms in bars and restaurants are filled with ice. Sixty years ago or so, even high-end hotels made sure their urinals were frozen throughout the day. But why? Well, it has a lot to do with smell and aiming. To help us solve this puzzling question, we turn to Klaus Reichardt, Founder and CEO of Waterless Urinal Co, the maker of waterless urinals: • The first ever licensed urinal: invented on March 27, 1886, by Andrew Rankin; “He called his invention ‘the best thing on earth’,” says Reichardt. • Realizing there could be an “unpleasant smell” coming from his urinal, Rankin also included a homemade recipe for making his first urinal block using sugar, molasses, syrup, soda chloride , water and other ingredients. • The recipe became cumbersome, so in the 1880s a shrewd businessman began marketing the first urinal cakes made with Naphthalene. “It certainly killed the odor, but it also destroyed red blood cells when inhaled in large amounts. By the early 1900s, it was gradually phased out”. • That brings us to the ice. When Prohibition began in 1920, scouts opened up across the country. The speakeasies bought tons of ice. To clear the way for new deliveries, the old rock is thrown into the urinal mainly because throwing it in alleys or on the street will likely attract police attention. • To the surprise of the bartender, ice has eliminated the odor in the urinal. As one expert explains, ice freezes odor-causing molecules in the urine, preventing them from escaping. Eventually, the odor-filled molecules melt with the ice and drip down the urinal and down the drain. • The heyday of urinal ice was the 1960s; bar owners found ice to provide a bit of entertainment for gentlemen and improve their goals; “There’s something to be done to reduce spills,” said Richard Thaler, a professor at the University of Chicago. “Today’s ice is gradually depleted if there is no other reason to reduce water and energy consumption,” explains Reichardt. “Good, even fun while it lasts, new technologies, especially on waterless urinals have eliminated this need.”
