Slowing Down Saves Lives, But Many of Us Refuse to Do it

We are all guilty of putting our pedals into metal to get to our destination. Maybe we overslept and have to go to work, or maybe we’re too distracted to notice our pace. Whatever the reason, speeding — or driving too fast for the weather or road conditions — is a dangerous habit and one of the causes of a large number of accidents. fatal accidents every year. We look at what drives people to speed and how problem solving can save lives.

Dangers of speeding

When we talk about speed, there are two different scenarios. The most obvious is when the speed limit sign says 35, but we’re traveling 50. The other is when the speed limit on the interstate is 75, but it’s heavy traffic or it’s cloudy raining cats and dogs. In these conditions, it’s not safe to drive 75, so even though that’s the speed limit, safety suggests you should drive at a slower speed. In either case, speeding can lead to a fatal traffic accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were nearly 10,000 speed-related deaths on our roads in 2014. Speeding is a contributing factor. 28% of all traffic deaths in 2014. Some other key findings include:

  • Drivers most often found to have speeded in a fatal crash were male, aged 15-24, at 38%.
  • About 40 percent of all speeding drivers involved in a fatal crash have a blood alcohol concentration of 0.8 percent or higher.
  • Of all motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes, 33% speeded, a higher percentage than drivers of any other type of vehicle.
  • Only 13 percent of speed-related deaths occur on interstate highways.

Why is everyone speeding up?

NHTSA recently concluded a study on the motivations behind speeding. The organization believes that in order to reduce speeding incidents, it is first necessary to understand what drives people to speed. The study examined many factors, including demographics and speed limit enforcement, and found that there are some key commonalities among speed runners. They found that many people speeded for one of the following reasons:

  • Situational factors. Rides have certain qualities that encourage people to speed up. Haste is a big contributing factor, but so is the duration of the trip and the driving environment. For example, many people report speeding only when on a long trip with very few other cars around them. Others admitted to speeding when they were late.
  • Social pressure. Many drivers say they feel pressured to keep up with traffic. If the surrounding vehicles are speeding, everyone is obliged to drive at the same speed so as not to obstruct traffic. In addition, they felt the risk of getting a traffic ticket was lower if everyone was speeding.
  • Not paying attention. Drivers often exceed the speed limit simply because they are not paying attention to their driving speed. Factors such as traffic volume, driving a powerful vehicle and playing music are thought to be contributing factors to the increase in speed. Some bus operators also blame their speeding for distracting passengers.
  • It feels good. Some drivers said they were speeding when rushing. They say driving fast is fun, especially if they drive a sports car. This type of thrill-seeking driver was also more likely to report feeling aggressive behind the wheel.
