How To Make Song Of India Plant Bushy

I first saw a species of reflective Dracaena, then called a reflex pleomele, when I was working as an interior planter in Boston. We don’t get much from Florida growers but I’ve always loved this plant. It develops an interesting slightly twisted shape as it grows, which adds to its appeal. I have been growing Dracaena Reflexa Song Of India for many years and wanted to share these care tips with you. It has brilliant histogram foliage (which I just love!) Needs a good amount of natural light to maintain. If you’ve been following me here or on social media, you know how sketchy foliage plants knock my socks off.

Size

You often see these for sale as smaller plants in 6″ or 8″ pots, which are table plants. When you have 10″, 12″ & 14″ pot sizes, those are floor plants. The highest height I’ve seen Song Of India as a houseplant is 6′.

Growth rate

Slow to moderate. The more light, the faster it will grow.

Use

Like many houseplants, this is a table plant as well as a floor plant. Mine is currently 18″ tall and sits on a small chest. Over the years, it will grow into a floor plant as long as it has enough natural light and is repotted every 2-3 years.

Close relatives

Dracaena Song Of India Care Tips:

Exposure

Song Of India is a medium to high light houseplant. Mine is in my kitchen in the East/South direction, where the sliding doors and frosted glass skylights give it a bright dose of natural light all day. I rotate it every few months so it gets uniform light everywhere. Do not expose to direct sunlight, too hot or you will get burned. And, don’t even try this plant in low light – it won’t do any good. Just keep away from hot windows and direct afternoon sun. During the dark winter months, you may have to move your home to a location with more light to keep it cheerful.

Sprinklers

I watered and let it dry for at least 1/2 before watering again. Mine is currently in a 6-inch pot and I water it weekly (I’m in Tucson – sunny, dry climate). During the winter months, it is every 2 weeks. Adjust this to suit your climate and exposure, your pot size, and soil mix.

Temperature

If your home is comfortable for you, it should be as well for your houseplants. Just make sure to keep your Dracaena Song Of India away from any cold drafts as well as air conditioning or heating vents. Read more: how to charge a 410a AC device This is the shape of a mature Song Of India.

Humidity

This plant is native to the tropics. Even so, I find them to be adaptable and do well in our homes where the air is dry. Here, the hot dry Tucson mine here is looking good so far after having it for a few years. My plants have a few small brown tips and that’s a response to dry air. Place the plant on cobblestone but make sure the drainage holes &/or the bottom of the pot are not submerged in water. Misting a few times a week will also help.

Fertilizing / Feeding

I find that Song Of Indias is not too needy when it comes to feeding. Right now I feed all my houseplants a light layer of compost with vermicompost, then cover with a light layer of compost every spring. It’s easy – each layer 1/4 to 1/2 ″ for a smaller sized tree. Read about my compost / compost feeding right here I cannot recommend a specific fertilizer as I have never used 1 for my Song Of India. Mine looks fine so I don’t have a need at the moment. That could change! Whichever you use, don’t fertilize houseplants in late fall or winter – that’s their time to rest. Over-fertilizing Song Of India will cause salt accumulation and can burn the roots. Be sure to avoid fertilizing stressed houseplants, ie. dry or soaked bones.

Soil

Use a good organic potting soil when repotting this plant. You want it to be enriched with good stuff but also well drained. I am part of Ocean Forest & Happy Frog because of their high quality ingredients. I use 1 & then next time another time. Sometimes I combine them. They are well suited for growing in containers, including as houseplants. I usually mix with a little or 2 pumice or perlite and local compost. I plant and repot very well so I always have a large amount of soil material on hand in my garage. Pumice & perlite aids drainage & aeration & compost enriches the mix.

Repotting / Transplantation

I am repotting the Dracaena Song Of India this spring. When I lifted the plant and looked into the drainage hole, I could see the roots. It’s now in a 6″ pot and I’m transplanting it into an 8″ pot. I’ll be doing a post and video on this soon, so stay tuned for that.The sticks, or trunks, close.

Kinda easy! Simply cut the end branches to 6-12 inches long. Make sure your pruning tools are clean and sharp when doing this. I have always bred them in the country. You can also make a light mix like a starter seed mix or a succulent & cactus mix.

Cut

This plant does not grow fast so pruning is not really necessary. If so, it will be used for propagation &/or when the stem is too long. You can cut them down and the sprouts will eventually appear at the top of the stem. The parts you cut off can also be propagated.

Bugs

Song Of India can be susceptible to mealybugs, especially deep inside newly grown trees. That’s what happened to me last year. These white, cotton-like pests like to roam the nodes and under the leaves. I simply blew them away (lightly!) in the sink with the spray and that did the trick. Pet

All species of dracaenas are considered toxic to pets. I refer to the ASPCA website for my information on the subject – here is more information on this for you. Most houseplants are toxic to pets in some way, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you on this topic.

Here are a few things to know about your Song Of India tree:

They gradually lose the lower leaves as the plant grows taller. That’s how the plant grows like Dracaena Lisa & Dracanea marginata. Song Of India develops into a cane or stalk form over time. As a small tree you can buy it with foliage up and down the stem but that will change over time. Just know that the tree won’t grow too tall over time if you do it regularly. I rotate it every few months, don’t get too wet or the roots will rot. Roots also need oxygen. Song Of India is easiest to clean in the sink or shower. The heat can blow a lot of dust around. Your leaves need to breathe and dust buildup can prevent this. A soft, damp rag works just as well as a spray. And don’t use a commercial foil polish – it clogs pores. You can see that twisting has started even on this smaller plant. If the leaves turn yellow/brown, the leaves are most likely too wet. Or, if the plant (stem) is mushy, it means it’s too wet. And remember, if the leaves underneath fall off occasionally, that’s just the nature of these plants and how they grow. If a lot of leaves are dropped then there is a problem.To summarize is: To successfully grow Song Of India as a houseplant, you need to provide it with medium to high light. Many people fail with this plant because of low light and too much water. It needs to be grown in a mixture that is well aerated and drained but still rich in nutrients. However, don’t expect it to grow too fast as it really takes time. But my goodness, that new development is so vibrant and brilliant!
