And here’s how to do it!Step 1: Find a stump and peel it off. My parents just cut down a tree in their backyard a few weeks ago and kept it for firewood. We looked through the pile of manure and picked the most even stump we could find.Then I used a flat head screwdriver to peel off the shell. Once I have removed all the bark, I have to clean it. There was some mold growing on the stump since it was still a little damp, so I wiped it down with bleach and water in a ratio of 1:3 to kill anything that was living on this bad boy. Here is the bleach money:Step 3: Once it’s clean, it needs to be dry! My stump still had quite a bit of water left to dry, so we put it in my parents’ basement right next to the dehumidifier to dry for a few months. You don’t need to use a dehumidifier which just speeds up the process, you can still see some stains from where the mold grew but the mold itself is long gone. After the stump was completely dry, it also lost a few pounds. This is my dried stump. You can see some facial stains that I ended up with below:Step 4: Sand and dirty your stump! Polish any rough spots with 220-grit sandpaper. For stains, you can keep it natural and use a light or dark color. I decided on something in between. To finish my stump, I gave it two generous coats of Minwax Polyurethane in Semigloss.
