How To Make A Polka Dot Pattern In Illustrator

Since so many of you come here to design patterns, I decided to create a series of tutorials that will show you how to create surface patterns and apply them to your graphics. In this first tutorial, we will create a polka dot pattern in Illustrator using the Pattern Maker tool. This tool is only available in Illustrator CS6 and CC. Create a new document

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to create a polka dot template that you can use as the background for your blog’s graphics or for your artwork. That’s why you can use any artboard size you want.I’ll be backgrounding this post’s featured image, so I started with an 800x1200px artboard at 72ppi.

Set up your workspace

We will be working mainly with the Swatches and Layers panel, so we can use a custom workspace or a Painting workspace.Go to Basic in the upper-right corner of the screen and select Painting from the drop-down menu. This will open up a few useful panels.

Create textures

The next step is to create a circle. You can do this using the Ellipse Tool (L) or the Paintbrush Tool (B).Read more: How to start a screen printing business Choose your favorite fill color and set the stroke color to no color. If you’re using the Ellipse Tool, click on your artboard and enter the height and width of the circle, or click and drag until you have the size you want. Holding Shift while creating a shape will help you create a perfect circle.

Create a template

There are two ways to create a template. You can select your circle and go to Object > Pattern > Create or drag it onto the Swatches panel. Your template will be added to your Templates, and if you want to edit it, you can double-click it.When you add a pattern to the Swatches library, you can remove the circle from your artboard.

Edit your template

When you create a template, the Template Options menu appears. This menu will allow you to change the name of the pattern, the type of tile, the size of the texture, and the spacing between the shapes.If you want to add space between the polka dots, select Size Tile to Art and enter horizontal and vertical spacing values. I’m using a 30x30px circle and 30px between the dots.If you don’t like the default grid style, you can use one of four other tile types: row tile, column tile, column hex, and row hex.You can save different templates by tapping Save a copy or clicking Done when you’re satisfied with the template.

How to use polka dots

To create a polka dot background, set the polka dot pattern as the fill color and create a rectangle with the Rectangle Tool (M) as large as your artboard. To align it with your artboard, select the rectangle and click the icons for Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center.The template we created has a transparent background, so in this step you can save it as a transparent background PNG. If you want to add a full-color background, select the polka dot rectangle and press Ctrl + C (Command + C) to copy the background and Ctrl + B (Command + B) to paste and send it to the back. Make sure that the background layer is selected in the Layers panel (it has a blue square next to the layer’s name) and set the fill color to the color you want for the background.Don’t forget to save your template from File > Save. If you’re exporting your sample as JPEG, make sure anti-aliasing is set to Optimize for Art so you won’t see any nasty white lines on your sample.
