Linear Fade
This is the simplest type of descending where the gain increases or decreases at a constant rate. Easily create a linear fade from silence in Audacity using Effect > Fade In. A linear fade to silence was created using Effect > Fade Out. The “shape” of the fade is often described in terms suggesting the appearance of a constant level signal to which an effect has been applied. For example, if a linear fade is applied to the generated tone, the blur can be seen in a straight line from the silence up to the original level.
Fade exponentially
This is another very popular fade pattern. Its popularity stems from the fact that it closely models the way in which sound decays naturally. For example, comparing the waveform of a gunfire record with that of a bell, we can clearly see that although the time scales are very different, the shape of the sound as it decays is very similar: In Audacity, the Envelope Tool creates an exponential fade. Similar (but not identical) blur shapes can be created by applying linear blur multiple times to the same selection. For example, here’s a fade effect created by applying the Fade Out effect, then repeating it three times using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + R (Repeat Final Effect). Fade . Equal Power
If one sound fades in while another fades out, this is called a crossover. A common problem with combining two sounds using a linear fade is that the volume level can drop a bit midway through the transition. To mitigate this problem it is common to use a fade shape, versus a linear blur, which curves up in the middle, so that the volume level that remains in the middle of the transition is slightly higher. One of the most commonly used crossfade shapes is the “Equal Power Fade”; so called because the average power (and thus the magnitude) remains fairly constant during the crossover transition for music and other unrelated sounds. Sine Curve Fade
The raised sine curve (or cosine curve) is based on the shape of the sine wave. This type of fade-in is often used for music fade-out because it produces a smoother, more tonal, fade-in sound than linear fade-in. It is also sometimes used as an alternative to Equal Power Fade for crossfade because it avoids the possibility of peak gain during crossfade (Like linear fade, it produces “Equal Gain” crossfade).
DJ Crossfade Curve
The DJ mixer has a cross slide control that is basically two equalizers going back together in one unit. Moving in one direction, it fades out at source A and fades out at source B, and when moved to the other pole, it fades out from source A and fades out at source B. The original DJ mixers creates a (almost) equal power look, but In response to demand from DJs, other fade shapes have been developed that have a more pronounced curve, thus making the mix clearer during conversion. This works in a similar way to the Middle Blur adjustment control in Audacity’s Adjustable Blur effect. This is a more sophisticated and advanced fade mode that gives you settings to control the shape of the blur. This effect is more flexible than Fade In and Fade Out in that it can fade to or from any gain level instead of just between the silence and the original level.

The purpose of crossfade is to create smooth transitions between two audio parts. The two parts overlap and when one fades in, the other fades in. This technique is commonly used by DJs, for “composite” tracks and mashups.
