You should aim to vacuum your swimming pool at least once a week. Skimmers are only capable of removing leaves, dirt and floating debris. Most of the debris entering the pool will float for 3-4 hours, but will then sink to the bottom. )

  • A vacuum hose. We recommend this tube here.
  • One vacuum head. There are 2 types: head for concrete or brick lined pool with wheels; brush head for vinyl lined swimming pools. We introduce these Vacuum Heads here.

How to vacuum a swimming pool with a sand filter?

If your pool uses a sand filter, here are the steps.1. Remove large residue or debris. Before you start vacuuming, use a shovel to remove any particularly large leaves or debris that could clog the vacuum head or hose.2. Attach the Vacuum Head to the Telescopic Pole and Tube.3. Flood the hose with water. Submerge the tube and let the water cover. The purpose is to remove trapped air that could be drawn into the pump and create an air mass. Pro tip: hold the hose next to the return outlet to quickly refill the hose with water.4. Attach Hose to Skimmer or Dedicated Suction Port. If your pool has a dedicated suction port, attach a hose to it. If your pool doesn’t have one, vacuum the pool with a skimmer. With most skimmers, you need to remove the basket to attach the hose. The tube port is located at the bottom of the skimmer.5. Vacuuming for the Pool. Using a telescopic pole, move the vacuum head slowly and deliberately across the bottom and walls of the tank.6. Disconnect Hose from Skimmer or Dedicated Suction Port. After disconnecting, you can dismantle the vacuum device.7. Turn off the pump.8. Backwash. Turn the filter valve to the Backwash position. The sand inside the sand filter system blocks debris, dirt and oil. Backwashing reverses the flow of water and pushes dirty water through the drain into the ground or drains. Turn on the pump and backwash for 2 minutes or until the water in the sight glass (which is on top of the filter) comes out clear.9. Turn off the pump.10. Wash off. Turn the filter valve to the Drain position. Turn on the pump and run the wash for 1 minute.11. Turn off the pump.12. Clean the filter. Close the skimmer valve and empty the skimmer filter basket and clean the hair catcher. When you’re done, reopen the skimmer valve. Read more: How to draw a cartoon bell13. How to Vacuum a Pool Without a Filter

If your pool filtration system has a multi-port valve, you can vacuum the pool by going through the entire filter and delivering the vacuumed water directly to the drain. and especially when the water has an algae problem. Live algae easily pass through the filter media and back into the pool. And the same goes for dead algae after shock treatment. A typical multiport system has 6 different settings – Filter, Backwash, Flush, Recirculate, Close and Waste.1. Proceed with steps 1-5, above.6. Turn off the pump.7. Switch Multi-port valve settings to Garbage.8. Turn on the pump.9. Turn off other Skimmer valves. If you have more than one skimmer, turn off the valves at all but the one your vacuum hose is plugged into. Read more: how to put a belt buckle on a regular belt10. Reset the filter valve to filter and turn on the pump.Note: because vacuuming drains water straight out of the pool, you may need to refill the pool when you’re done.
