How To Care For String Of Bananas

Looking for a hanging succulent that’s as easy to maintain and cool as possible? Here are tips for caring for and growing String Of Bananas indoor plants. Everyone seems to fall madly in love with that weird and wonderful succulent String Of Pearls plant and rightly so. Did you know there’s another adorable succulent “chain” on the block? This 1 is easier to keep alive and also attractive; in my humble opinion anyway. Let me introduce you or get to know you about the String Of Banana houseplant and how to grow it. The stems are thicker, making them less delicate. They grow faster allowing for more breeding. Bananas don’t dry out like some pearls and their stems tend to. I’ve had readers say that SOB is much easier for them to survive and no luck with String Of Pearls.

Size

String Of Bananas are sold in 3″, 4″ & 6″ pots. My trails are currently 4 minutes long. Those trails can be up to 6 ′ long. This plant is truly a ground cover. when growing in its natural environment.

Use

A hanging pot (this is a pot hanger – I sprayed it purple) is suitable for this succulent plant. It can also be placed in a decorative pot and placed on top of bookcases, shelves, ledges, etc. so it can hang down and show off those beautiful trails.

Growth rate

My Chain of Bananas grows moderately to quickly outdoors. It goes down much faster than it spreads. You can expect a moderate growth rate indoors provided the plant gets enough light.

Exposure

The succulent plant that follows needs as much light as you can give it indoors; medium to high exposure. If it’s in a place with low light, it won’t grow much. Just make sure to avoid hot, direct sunlight (especially during the summer months) and make sure it doesn’t touch any hot glass. Either way, it will burn.

Sprinklers

It’s hard to say exactly because there are so many factors that go into this (you can see what I mean by watering 101 indoor plants) but every 2-3 weeks is fine. You should water the String Of Bananas thoroughly and then let it dry before re-watering, don’t keep it moist but don’t let it dry for too long. This type 1, like all succulents, can suffer from root rot.

Temperature

As I always say: if your house is comfortable for you, your plants will be happy too. Normal house temperature is fine.Read more: how much jello to drink to get drunk | Top Q & AE Although this plant can tolerate wide temperature variations outdoors, make sure it is not next to or on top of a fireplace or air conditioner. They don’t like hot or cold drafts.

Fertilizer

I don’t fertilize my String Of Bananas houseplants because most succulents don’t need it. In early spring, I feed them 1/4 vermicompost & 1/4 compost on top. If you go this route, it’s easy. Over-application of either of these can burn the roots of houseplants. Vermicompost is my favorite modification that I use sparingly because it’s rich. This is why I like it so much. I am currently using Worm Gold Plus. I use Tank’s local compost. Try Dr. Earth if you can’t find anywhere you live. Both vermicompost and compost naturally enrich the soil for healthy roots & stronger plants. Liquid kelp or fish emulsion also works as well as a balanced liquid garden fertilizer (5-5-5 or less). Dilute any of these to half strength and apply in the spring. If for some reason you think your String Of Bananas needs another fertilization, do it again in the summer. Is it easy – 1/4 to 1/2? each layer for a larger sized houseplant. Read about my compost/feeding compost right here.

Soil

An organic succulent & cactus plant mix is best for this plant. You want it to be light and well-draining. I use a local blend that is also tough so the water drains right out. It’s the kind of mix I use for my succulents that grow outdoors. Succulent plants need a liquid mixture so that the roots do not rot. You may want to increase the moisture for the drainage coefficient to reduce the risk of rot by adding some pumice or perlite.

Repotting

This plant is very easy to repot because the leaves do not fall easily like other hanging succulents like String Of Pearls & the Burro’s Tail Sedum. Succulents can stay tight in their pots for a while, so you don’t need to repot them every year or two. pot more than 1 ″. If a String of Bananas is planted too far in the pot, the plant will suffer from stem rot. Spring and summer are the best times to repot a cactus. You can see small roots forming from several mature stems. In fact they are self-propagating!

spread

It’s quick and easy. I mentioned you in this post and video.

Bugs

My String Of Bananas have never been infested with planthoppers but they can be susceptible to aphids and mealybugs. Make sure to click the links so you can identify them and see the control methods.

Pet

This I am not 100% sure because SOB is not in the ASPCA list. Because they involve String of Pearls which are considered toxic, I’d say this 1 too. If your pet is easy to chew on the plant, keep it out of their reach. With this plant, it is very easy to do because you can hang or place it high on a bookcase, shelf.

The flowers

It has! The white flowers grow on long stems that are slightly curved upwards. They are not as fragrant as the String Of Pearls flowers but they are equally beautiful. Flowering time here is winter because of a lot of succulents. Shorter days and cooler evenings play this role. Things to know about taking you out in the summer

If you live in a cold climate, your String Of Bananas will greatly appreciate a great outdoor summer break. Everything I wrote above applies except for 3 things I want to point out: Make sure it’s not exposed to any strong, direct sunlight or it will burn out in no time. If you experience a lot of rain during the summer months, you might consider putting yours under protection. A covered patio or a covered patio would be fine. If a Banana String is too wet and not dry, it can rot and the stem and banana (leaves) will turn mushy. it is a good blow (gentle – not like a flamethrower) to get rid of any hitchhiking pests &/or their eggs.
