How To Build A Cyc Wall
Professional photographers and commercial advertising photographers require a lot of very specific equipment. They need to keep all their cameras and lighting equipment up and running year after year, but that’s not the only concern they have. Their studio usually includes a tornado wall; one wall provides perfect light and no horizon. Cyc walls are also often referred to as infinity walls because they appear to simply fade in all directions with no defined horizon. Perhaps you’ve also seen the tornado wall in a theatrical play? Today we will show you how easy it can be to build a bike wall.

Frame your usual wall
Build a wall just like you would if you were building a standard wall. Your studs should be centered 16” to maintain the structural security you need. Skip this step if you’re building a bike wall into an existing room. If you are building into an existing room, you will need to remove the drywall to expose the studs.
Remove the right corners
The goal of a bicycle wall is to hide the right angle intersections. Your finished cycle wall will not appear to be visible at all, like the inside of an egg without a shell. We achieve this by installing a half radius, about a quarter of a circle, that bends to every right angle, effectively eliminating all hard corners.
Create curves to start forming the Cyc . wall
Drywall is designed for installation on perfectly flat surfaces. But it’s actually quite pliable when you wet the back with a sponge and then lean against the wall to begin to curve (sag) under its own weight. Do this a few times and it will be much easier. Complete the corners
The corners are the most difficult part to install because of the unique shape and the required bend. Consider using two layers of 1/4″ bent drywall instead of 1/2″ drywall for the corners. Some builders use chicken wire and plaster. This method is also effective but requires significantly more drying time due to the amount of plaster used.
Ice, Mud and Sand
Once you’ve finished setting the radius and creating the drywall bends, it’s time to glue it all back on. Use drywall tape as you normally would when building a wall. Apply plaster, smooth as much as possible and let dry. Sand the entire wall for a perfectly smooth finish. Reapply drywall slurry as needed to achieve desired smoothness.
