Let’s just say I know a thing or two on the subject! As the headband squeezes your strand of hair, it actually slowly slides upwards, pulling your hair with it. You run the risk of hair loss from those pressure points, namely the front of your head, the temple area, and points a few inches behind your ears.
1. Soak your headband in oil.
The oil will help loosen the elastic bonds a bit. Then, stretch the band before you start wearing it. Wrap it around the back of a chair or something loose enough to have good stretch so that by the time you wear it, it won’t be as tight as it came out of the box. I got this tip from Toni Daley a while ago and she analyzed it brilliantly in this video!
2. Use a long, thin silk or satin scarf.
You can control the tightness of your hair better when you tie the scarf to create volume. And, as you probably already know, the benefit of using these materials as opposed to cotton accessories is that they won’t draw moisture from your hair.
3. Use shoelaces.
Just like a scarf, you can tie a simple shoelace just right so it doesn’t get too tight. Most shoelaces are long enough to have room to “give away” and then whatever extra you have left, just tuck them in and no one is the wiser! This video may be helpful…
4. Use tights.

Cut to the leg and top length of one side of the old pair so that you have a piece long enough to wrap around your head at least once. Like shoelaces, simply tuck the excess in or use a few bobby pins to secure the ends in place. Here is a helpful demo from Goddess Hazel.
5. Good moisturizing for hair.
Even though you’ve taken all the necessary precautions with the type of accessory you use, you may still be at risk of breakage if you wear an accessory such as a headband or scarf in your hair that is in need of moisture. . These dry hairs are more prone to breakage so you have to be careful. Make sure to properly moisturize your hair with water or a water-based product, then tie it back with butter or light oil (depending on how you use it for your hair texture). This will help create a partial barrier of protection and slip in case your accessory starts to move. That way, instead of creating friction that would cause breakage, it would comfortably slide into a position where it would stay fixed.
6. Take a break.
Puffy styling can be a great style because it’s quick and easy. But wearing multiple accessories in the same place can also cause unwanted wear and tear on your hair. Try taking a break from high buns by alternating days when you’ll be in a high bun with days when you’ll let your hair down. Also, you should let your hair down before sleeping so that your hair/head can breathe and your headband doesn’t move around causing unwanted friction and breakage while you sleep. 6 tips to wear high puffs without pain! #naturalhair #teamnatural Click to Tweet Hope these tips can help you on your way to perfection without compromising on comfort or damage!
