7 Ways To Draw Whiskers For Colored Pencil Artists

Whoever draws animals will have to draw beards sooner or later. They’re just a small part of most animal art, but believe it or not, they can make or break a piece. It is important to get them correct. Today’s post is a follow-up to a reader question from December 2019. You can read it here. That post was specifically about how to draw beards on watercolor pencils, and it’s a useful post for those who combine watercolors and traditional crayons. to draw beards, but the exact answer for each artist depends on what they want to do with their artwork. Since my focus is on creating archival art, I will answer this question with archiving methods. I will talk about some of them at the end of this article.

4 ways to draw beard for art

The following four ways to draw a beard — or any similar little detail — will work with any brand of crayons. However, not all of them are suitable for all situations, so it’s best to practice with each situation before trying them out on an important one.

#1: Impressive line

I used to always impress lines into the paper before layering the color. I impressed with the lines to highlight the hair, draw the beard and add other small details that are difficult to over-color. That way, the line is whatever color I stack it first, instead of the bright white of the paper. This is currently the way I most often use impression lines — to sign pieces. In this case, I gave my signature an impression after finishing the background layer, so the signature didn’t appear bright white and matched the artwork more naturally. I used to do. Why? Mainly because I tend to overdo it with it. You know the idea. If one line is good, two is better and you can’t go wrong with three. Or four or five or a dozen, except where you can get it wrong. With too much use, dramatic lines become distracting Read more: How to locate frozen water pipes When you use impression lines, remember two things.Draw the beard with dramatic lines on the paper.I impressed the lines into the paper before adding any color to this horse’s mane. They showed up pretty well after I covered them with dark colors, but it was easy to see that I was using them too much and not properly. That is, change the amount of pressure you apply. For example, to draw whiskers, start with heavier pressure at the base of the whisk and decrease the pressure as you draw towards the end of the whisk. That creates a more natural looking beard. Second, try to impress with a really sharp pencil. I sometimes use the Prismacolor Verithin pencil to create dramatic lines. They are a stiff pencil and hold a very good spot, so they are perfect as a stylus. You can also add colors at once, so you can see where your dramatic lines are before you start overlaying them with color. That’s always helpful (especially if you tend to go overboard!)

#2: Use a hard pencil to draw beard on layers of color

The second method is to add them through layers of color using one of the stiffer crayons. Prismacolor Verithin pencils are just like regular Prismacolor pencils, except they contain much less wax. The pigment cores are thinner and harder, so the pencil holds a spot longer. That’s what makes them great brushes, and it also makes them great for drawing on other colors. What you do is paint all or most of the color you want on the animal’s face. Then grind a piece of Verithin of the right color to a very sharp point, and paint the beard over other colors. Since the pencil is hard, it takes in some of the color, but leaves some color behind. The resulting marks won’t be very bright, but you can add less obvious whiskers this way. Color pencils with thinner and stiffer cores such as Prismacolor Verithin pencils or various oil-based pencils can be used to draw beards that are lighter than other colors. You can also use them to “deepen” color, scratching out beard shapes. The biggest advantage is that you can add different colored beards, so not all beards are the same. past, but the results were never what I was looking for. However, it is well worth a try. It might just work for you!

#3: Shave with a knife

Probably the best way to add a beard is to use a sharp tool like a Slice porcelain blade or an X-acto knife. Use the knife the same way you would a pencil, but scratch off the color once you’ve finished the rest of the drawing. You can mark a few marks on the drawing, then add color on top and draw a few more lines. It’s easy to cut into or even through the paper if you tend to be heavy-handed. This method definitely requires practice before you use it on finished or near-finished artworks.

#4: Brush & Pencil Touch Up Texture and Titanium White

Finally, there’s Brush & Pencil’s Touch Up Texture and Titanium White. Titanium white can be painted right on crayons, then painted over with other colored pencils. It was specially developed for use with colored pencils, so you don’t have to worry about damaging your drawing or peeling off the white paint, as can happen with gel pens or acrylic paints. beard, then shade as needed with color when they are too white. Take a look at one of those tools to see how effective they are.

3 non-archive methods to draw beard

The following three beard painting methods will work, but some of them work for a very limited time. They are not suitable for the artwork you intend to display or sell, but if you are making crafts, greeting cards or creating artwork to make copies and you are not selling the originals, they will work.

Acrylic paint

When I first started with crayons, I could never get the highlights bright enough. So I bought a tube of white acrylic paint to add some highlights. It looks great at first, but after the paint dries, it seems to fade into crayons. The results left me so unsatisfied that I only used it a few times. It’s like trying to get water on oil. The wax in the pencil keeps the water-based acrylics from sticking.

Gel Pen

I’ve never used gel pens with crayons, and probably never will because they work pretty much like acrylic paints. They can last for a while, but sooner or later the bond between the crayon and gel pen will break and the accents added with the gel pen will come off. adult coloring books, or arts and crafts, but for portraits and other drawings that I want to last decades, that would be a problem.

oil painting

I haven’t tried this either, although I did try adding details to an oil painting with crayons once. That doesn’t work very well, and I don’t expect oil paint on crayons to do either. But the biggest potential problem with this combination is not with crayons. It is with the paper. Oil paints are created with an oil car to make them useful. That oil can seep through layers of crayons and stain the paper underneath. It can even discolor crayons. The idea is interesting enough to make me think of trying it out someday, but not exciting enough to try it on a finished canvas. Especially not one I like! If I try it, I’ll let you know how it goes.
