How to fix a HOLE in your knitting
I recently had a text thread with three friends. We were chatting when suddenly this text appeared: Followed by another, more colorful language, and the explanation that as she was opening a box (in which there was a sweater), she cut a sweater. pulled out a template, cropped it, and started taking pictures so I could send her some “how-to” photos, but my friend had a better idea. She will send it to me to fix. . . As long as I’m fixing the hole, I take a few pictures for all of you. Since I also took close-ups of my samples, I’m adding them as well. The first step is to take the stitches you can see and take them on a key stitch markerSince the duplicate stitch is easier from the stock side, I rotated the piece to work from the wrong side
Widen the hole to make sure you have an even hole all the way around.Notice that you will have another loop at the bottom of the hole then the top. I have a third row three hole stitch. I have 3 full loops on the bottom, 2 loops with 1/2 loops on the sides. Here is a sample shot showing a nice clean hole ready for repair. I’ve stapled the cut yarn out of the way so I’m ready to build my ladder.
Make the hole bigger to fix it.Now a little thin cotton yarn to the rescue. Since you can’t clone the stitch in the air, you can build a ladder to climb. Knit the cotton crochet horizontally to lock it in, then make 3 rows of “stitches”. Start by making a stitch scale that duplicates a few stitches before the hole, when you get to the hole:
- Insert the crochet back to the front through the bottom loop
- Bring it UP through the entire first seam on the right side of the underside, DOWN through 1/2 of the top seam, UP through the next seam at the top. Make sure you don’t pull the thread too tight. Use a ruler to check for gaps.
- Continue making duplicate stitch scales through the hole and into the next few real stitches on the left side of the hole.

Okay, back to the real sweater. . . Thread your real yarn into the needle on the mat and start making a few duplicate stitches in front of the hole. Once you get the hole you should be able to go back in front to front through the bottom loop, then around the ladder and behind where you came from the bottom loop and into the next seam
Adjust the tension.After you make row #1 of the stitches, adjust the tension before creating duplicate anchor stitches on the fabric to the left of the hole. Repeat for each row.
Time for Row No. 2When you get to the last row, you will now enter the stitches above the hole.

Finally, it’s time to weave the ends of your cut yarn as well as the new yarn you added. To avoid clumping, you can knit at the ends diagonally in all different directions. Skim the ends right through the stitches by separating the fabric layers.
