How are weddings featured on Harper’s Bazaar? As a former editor, I’ll tell you this: Editors are cut from the same canvas in a sense that we place so much emphasis on, we are obsessed with understanding our audience. ourselves and we know a thing or two about the power of a blog post. But our branding itself and the way we set out our groups and goals varies greatly between publications. What works well on Brides Magazine is different from what will work in The Knot, different from what will work for Munaluchi, different from what will work for wedding blogs, Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar. In other words, there is no one-size-fits-all way to pitch and get the wedding covered in all the magazines. , Carrie Goldberg. We talked about her role, how she thinks about her audience and, of course, how the wedding was featured in Harper’s Bazaar. You can watch the full @editorinchiefmedia interview – and read 10 things to know for a wedding in Harper’s Bazaar!

1. Harper’s Bazaar Weddings and Travel Story is the work of the fashion team

At some magazines, there may be an actual wedding team or one that focuses solely on wedding planning stories. That is not the case at Harper’s Bazaar. At Harper’s Bazaar, all their wedding and travel content is created by the fashion team. And because weddings and travel don’t belong in the fashion group, those stories are all created with a fashion-first approach. So while Carrie and the other editors can create a lot of really great service-oriented stories about wedding planning or gift subscriptions, that content will always go to you with the first fashion lens. Talk about…

2. Harper’s Bazaar wedding highlights involve great fashion moments

The first question Carrie and her team want to know the answer to when they watch a wedding is what the bride (or the brides or grooms) wears. Carrie said: “It started with the dress for me. “And the couple and the style. Whether the head-to-toe view makes sense for the space the couple are in, for the number of their guests, is something I’ve never seen before,” she said. If it’s something she’s seen before, she wants it to be the best example of that style. “Just because it’s expensive or designer-branded doesn’t mean it’s right for us,” says Carrie. “A lot of the things we run are classic. A lot of the things we run are unlabelled. A lot was last season…. I just kept saying, isn’t that the best example of that? “

“Just because it’s expensive or designer-branded doesn’t mean it’s right for us,” says Carrie. “A lot of the things we run are classic. A lot of the things we run are unlabelled. A lot this past season.”

So when you’re thinking about how to make your wedding stand out on Harper’s Bazaar, ask yourself: How does the outfit (or dress) work in the context of the venue and the space? ? Does it all fit together? And are there any other fashion moments (for example, she changed) and do you have photos of those as well?

3. Inclusiveness is a publishing priority for Harper’s Bazaar editors

“I really want dynamic, diverse couples. I want comprehensive. I want LGBTQ+ couples. I want interracial couples,” said Carrie. “Like I don’t want a bride to exist in this world where Harpers’ Bazaar is a place where she can’t be seen or heard.”

“Like I don’t want a bride to exist in this world where Harpers’ Bazaar is a place where she can’t be seen or heard.”

She went on to add that while there are plenty of gorgeous white weddings by beautiful white couples in Northern California, “those people need to sit for a second because there’s a message we’re trying to say right now.” .”

4. A question Harper’s Bazaar editors always ask themselves: What makes this wedding so unique?

So they not only wanted to show diversity in all its ways, as well as fashion, but were also very interested in making sure it felt fresh and unique. Carrie explains: “The title for the wedding we featured last week was ‘This wedding is a jungle disco with crystal meditation.’ “The couple had a tea ceremony to themselves and a crystal meditation session for their guests and they found a secluded villa in Tulum, not in front of the beach. They want their guests to drive four-wheelers into the middle of nowhere to find a disco with acrobatics and tarot machines. “Of course not every Harper’s Bazaar wedding has to be this grand, but there needs to be some element of surprise for both the editors and their readers. In addition, Carrie adds: “I want to fall in love with them. Even if it’s not the textbook or what I expected. That’s the best part of these stories is exposing what a wedding is supposed to be. We are no longer in the realm of ‘supposed to do’. “

5. Independent portraits and stylish photos that don’t stand out on Harper’s Bazaar

Sending her a note here and there to follow her and give her something new is not a bad idea. Do so sparingly although approaching quality is much better than quantity.

6. In addition to the actual wedding, there are 3 other types of wedding articles published in Harper’s Bazaar

When you think about how weddings are featured on Harper’s Bazaar, you probably think first of their actual wedding articles and their best listings. However, there are other types of content. There’s wedding fashion, wedding beauty, and wedding planning, and the team covers and creates content for each of those categories (i.e. verticals). In terms of beauty, they include makeup, skin care, hair care, health, fitness, and even plastics. And then as they plan, they’ll create content about choosing your suppliers, how to work with them, narrowing down the color palette, planning moments of entertainment, and making guests experience. Super high touch.

7. Harper’s Bazaar tourist features are divided into several categories

Just as they refer to weddings in different ways, not every travel story has the same format. “There are hotels and spas, restaurants and dining, and then the best summaries and lists,” says Carrie. The best of the circles could include things like top beaches, the most beautiful cities in the world, how to shop in London like a local, she added. Finally, there’s the vertical honeymoon, which sits right between their wedding and the touristy parts.Screenshot 2020 08 21 at 4.22.27 pm

8. Harper’s Bazaar’s digital editorial calendar is timely and flexible (Read: The Pandemic Has Changed What They Are)

While the team has featured numerous destination weddings and travel highlights, the editorial team has changed their scope. They’re focusing a lot on service content couples can do at home like signing up for gifts and adopting new skin and hair beauty regimens- “all the things you can do at home leading up to the wedding in 2021,” Carrie said. As for the real wedding, they’re covering a lot of small domestic weddings right now. That’s not to say she won’t have a destination wedding. “I just want to be really sane: does everything that we’re pitching has a message that couples can deliver?”

One more thing about getting a wedding featured on Harper’s Bazaar: Read your recommendation over and over before sending it out, keeping the political and cultural air at bay. If you’re hesitating about sending something, tap a trusted friend to read it to you and do the test.

9. Editors at Harper’s Bazaar love to advertise via Email (The more clear and concise the better)

It’s actually quite simple and a relatively accessible pitching process. Carrie and the rest of the editorial team at Harper’s Bazaar love to get email pitches.Email: [email protected]Subject line: Make it clear and concise (like “Tulum Disco Wedding for your consideration” NOT “real wedding show”)Picture: Carrie prefers a Dropbox link or a Pixieset link that doesn’t expire. (She mentioned the “don’t expire” tip a few times so please do!) She likes to have a good amount of images- “not all of your raw photos but more like a few hundred photos.” pictures to see,” she said.Content copy: Get straight to the point and make it easy for her to scan emails. Include the couple’s name, where they got married, and details about their fashion moment. Also, if there’s something unique about their story that their photo isn’t clear on, mention it. “If they’ve known each other since they were seven or if something crazy happened and she changed her dress at the last minute,” she explains. You can also include a list of other relevant providers but that is not required as they will ask for that in the questionnaire.

10. Posting an image to your own account or blog won’t get you off the Harper’s Bazaar featured list

Harper’s Bazaar won’t feature a wedding that’s been published in another publication, but you are welcome to post your work on your website or Instagram feed. “Just save some for me,” said Carrie. As long as you haven’t posted all the photos from the wedding to your Instagram account, you can put your work out there.
