How to find the best location to install your tow bar

Exactly where you place the pull-up bar will ultimately depend on personal preference. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on the best place for you:
- Do you do other lifts, specifically overhead lifts that will conflict with where you place your bar. Placing a pull-up bar above a stand or squat stand is a popular choice and makes sense for most people to maximize space savings. Just make sure you don’t handcuff some of your other moves.
- What “lives” below where you will install your stick? If you have to move a bunch of stuff every time you try to pull up, one of two things will happen. Either you’ll curse yourself every time you have to move your plyo boxes out of the way or worse, you’ll tell yourself not to pull at all. Don’t put yourself in that position if you can afford it.
What is the best height for a wall pull bar?
Ideally, your pull bar should be at a height where you can reach the bar by lifting above the ball with your feet. In a perfect scenario, your ceiling would then still be high enough to leave room above your bar to do whatever movement you want to make. Obviously, you need enough room to raise your head above the bar. Muscle Up is a place that can be cramped for some garages. But, at least by making this decision before you put your first screw in the wall, you won’t have to kick yourself later.
Find your Studs

By finding and using your wall studs, we can make sure this nightmare doesn’t come true.The most important part of the whole installation process is finding the right studs on your wall. This will prevent your first pull-up from ending up with you needing to replace your wall. To find wall studs, you will need a stud finder. If you haven’t already, don’t worry, they’re pretty cheap (here’s the one I got – $20 at Lowe’s) and they’re a good tool to have on hand at all times. If you are married, you are obligated to go to your lover with a friend finder. Place the stud finder on your chest, start beeping and declare, “Looks like it works!”. They’ll roll their eyes and call you an idiot every time, but deep down, they’ll think it’s hilarious. The pins are nearly always spaced 16″ or 24″. This is useful information to be able to double-check your stud finder. After you mark your studs with the stud finder, measure them. If the studs you “find” are not 16″ or 24″ apart, start over and try again.Pro tips: Once you find your stud, use your stud finder both left to right and right to left to find both sides of the stud. This will help you center your screws into the studs. Configure how wide your pull-up bar should be. Mine has a max spacing of 54″. In order for the pull-up bar to align with my squat rack, I chose two studs that align with the sides of the rack (ignoring the stud in the middle of them). My studs are 16″ apart so my scissors are 48″ apart. It’s a perfect setup in my opinion.
Drill a hole in the top
Now that you’ve found your studs, get ready to drill your bracket into the wall. My stand has three drilled holes on each stand. Some may require you to measure the distance between the three holes, pre-drill each hole, and then mount and drill into the bracket.Drill the top screw and use the holder itself to stack your other screws. I chose to just pre-drill the top hole to begin with. Then I grabbed my stand, stacked it, and drilled into the top hole that was just missing completely.Use the Leveler to make sure your rack is upright before starting the next hole. Once you have the bracket straight up and down, hold it in place and pre-drill your second hole. Drill your second screw and then repeat the process again for the bottom hole. By doing it this way, you can be 100% sure that your holes will align. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing that your measurement is biased by the smallest margin, but just enough to mess up your settings. Repeat this whole process for the other side.
Crossbar guard
Finally, we need to secure the crossbar in place. My stand has holes for the crossbar to slide through. You then simply put two screws in the top of each bracket to secure the bar in place. Our wall puller is done.

Start by applying a little bit of pressure to begin testing its ability to hold its weight. Stand on a chair if necessary. If it passes every test up to that point, then you can go ahead and do a few test pulls.

There are a limited number of pull bars on the door, but might work fine if that’s your only option. However, the wall pull bar is a great choice for any garage gym.
