Make Your Own Swedish Blind

A Swedish blind is probably one of the easiest blind people to do on their own. This simple window shade is completely cordless. Instead of rolling it, you fold it and hook it to an already curled header. By using two strips of fabric, the finished curtain is also quite translucent. In terms of fabrics, you can choose a neutral color palette that perfectly matches the Scandinavian style. Here, we chose a bright green linen fabric and painted over the vertical lines with Chalk Paint® in Aubusson Blue.

To make a Swedish blind you will need:

Two strips of fabric
Velcro loops and hooks
Jupiter rings (aka eyelets or grommets)
A staple gun
Sewing machine and thread
Scissors
Tailor’s chalk.

To hang a Swedish Blind you will need:

10mm . stock steel grating
A wooden baton
screw
Electric drill
Pin gun
Hacksaw or grinder

Step by step instructions to make Swedish blind

Measure your window. Add to this measurement a seam allowance of 1.5cm. For the top of the blind, you need 2cm more.

Cut two pieces of fabric of this length. Here Annie used Linen Union in British yellow + Antibes Green painted with Chalk Paint® in Aubusson Blue.

Place the two right cloths together (make sure the painted sides are on the inside).

Pin and sew three sides of the fabric with 1.5 seams allowed. Leave the header unshared.

Use fabric scissors to cut off the bottom two corners.

Turn the fabric inside out, exposing the painted sides.

Iron.

For the top of the blind, fold over 1.5cm to the back (no stripes). Pin the soft side of the Velcro to the fabric and sew it down.

Measure where your Jupiter rings are located, so that the folds are in the right place. You only need a pair of rings on the top of the fabric, one on the sides. The rest of the loops need to be positioned in pairs vertically down the sides.

Use the inside of the ring to mark where you want to cut the hole. This must be correct!

Open the Jupiter rings and clamp them into the holes you made.

Step-by-step instructions for hanging Swedish blind people

Use a 10mm long rebar (i.e. a rebar used in concreting). Cut into two pieces 17cm long with a hacksaw or electric grinder.

Measure and cut your wood paneling to the width of the window.

Mark the wood where your Jupiter rings will go. Drill all the way through the bar with a 10mm drill bit.

Use a hammer to hit the steel dowels you have created. Make sure they go all the way through so that they are flush with the back of the wood.

Attach the other side of your Velcro to the top (not the front!) of the stick using a staple gun.

Attach the bracket to the wall with screws.

Hang the blind from the Velcro at the top and by positioning the Jupiter rings on the pegs.

Once you have your tarp in place, you can change the fabric and make a new curtain for each season or as often as you like. All you need to do is stick the new blind in place and you’re good to go!
