There are some items here that I used, and then discarded. So before you go and buy everything I’ve listed you can skip: Cross Stitch Mats Zip Ties
I start my project with the items on the right. I started by shaping the wire (make sure it’s very hard to bend, otherwise it will just droop). I know this by experience. I had to go back and buy a better new rope.

Then I zipped the plastic cross stitches together and into the “frame”. Then I decided that I hated this, because it stuck out on the parasite, like a peacock’s tail. So I removed it. In the end, I USE ONLY the wire and lace to create the frame of the wings.
Don’t pay attention to the embroidered cross pads, laces or wire frames on the wings. I got rid of that the next day when I had better wired. The things shown here are too flexible and too heavy. However, I made the straps with elastic before gluing the lace to the frame.
These are two lace gauges, folded in half on the wing frame. I then add more fabric below the frame.
I added 1 1/5 of the lace gauge to the bottom of the wing. They fit my husband’s 6′ frame and barely touch the ground. I cut the lace in the middle and shaped it so it opened above the lining to snap some hot booty photos!
Then I glued the feathers on with hot glue, starting from the bottom. I alternate rows of 8″ feathers with rows of 20″. Then when I get to the upper wing, I just use the 8″ on the side opposite the mannequin. When I did the back, I did the same on the bottom, but used 20-inch feathers on the top. I’ll cut it off eventually, and I know it’ll just make it fall more than it already is. It’s also exploring on the mannequin. I need to do something else. So I replaced the wire, with a gauge 1 copper wire in a black sheath from Home Depot (it was $1.98 a foot). This is also when I removed the cross stitch, as it was protruding unattractively.
This is the cord I used when I replaced the soft cord with another, useless one.
All DONE!

Unfortunately, I don’t have enough feathers to complete the wings. So I ordered 200 more 8 inch feathers from Ebay – for a total of 500 6-8 inch feathers. I will finish them as soon as they arrive (in about 10 days). But they’re done enough that I can use them today for a run.
I used the remaining half yard of fabric to create a fun gathering at the back of the wing, while creating weight and movement of the bottom.
Oh, and how do they look in? You tell me. I think these DIY Angel Wings are pretty awesome! Great for cosplay or boudoir sessions.
UPDATE: The wings were lived at their best and were so loved that I decided to create stronger, adjustable straps so EVERY body could enjoy their majesty. I took some quick photos of the new harness I created using a 1-inch leather band, rivets, a simple buckle and 3-inch O-ring, and a rivet tool.
