how to wire a push pull pot for coil splitting

A Push-Pull Bottle can add a lot of versatility to your guitar! This is a great way to add switches or other cool mods without modifying your guitar too much. You can use them to reverse phase, split the Humbucker, or fool your guitar in a new way. They can be a bit difficult for you to understand, but once you get the hang of the basics, they’ll be easy to understand. Push-Pull Pot, in its most basic definition, is a Potentiometeris attached on top of a SwitchRead: how to wire a push-pull tank for coil separation We call the switch a DPDT (Double Pole, Double Throw) Switch. ‘DPDT’ means the switch has two separate “poles”, or sides.

Basics of push-pull pots:

Contents

There are two components of the Push-Pull Pot: Pot and Switch. Although they look together, they are actually separate. As described in our previous article, Pot is a rheostat. It has one resistance band and a sweeper to select the resistor. Lug 1 is the beginning of the resistance band and Lug 3 is the end. The lug 2, or middle lug, is the sweep bar. The other part of the Push-Pull pot is Switch. The DPDT The switch has two sides. Face 1 (A – B – C) is completely independent of Side 2 (D – E – F). We call the center lugs, B and E, “common” or switch inputs – they are always connected. See below for an illustration of Commons:

DPDT CONVERT:

There are two separate sides of the switch (hence the ‘double’ at Double Pole, Double Throw). We can call them Side one & B side. The Selector connect different terminals on each side. Check it out:Push or pullWhen pushed down, the Selector is selecting the bottom four lugs (BCEF).

  • B connects to C
  • E connects to F

When pulled up, the Selector slides up and currently selects the top four lugs (ABDE).

  • B connects to A
  • E connects to D.
  • As you can see, B and E are always connected.

Split roll:

Split coil Just one of the many things you can do with push pots and a great place to start learning about them. You can use Coil Splitting to turn a Humbucker into a Single Coil by bringing one of its coils to ground. We have used both sides of the switch to illustrate two points:

  • It shows how to wire 3 conductors and 4 conductors, and
  • It shows that you can hit two separate buzzes with the same switch, using both sides.

    Split a bastardHOW IT WORKS:

  • When the Push-Pull Pot is pushed down, The humbucker still operates as usual.
  • When pulling the pusher up, “Tap” (Red on 3 conductors, Red and Green tied together on 4 conductors) is brought to ground, “Shorten” the coil. The entire pot’s housing should be grounded, so you could theoretically ground any switch wire by simply running one wire to the housing.
  • Partial coil separation:

Coil Splitting can sound great on higher output humbuckers, like our Modern PAF and High Output Humbucker. But what if you have a low output humbucker, like our Pure PAF? Do not be afraid. You can “Partially Decouple” the coil with our Partial Faucet Resistor.Split a bastardHow it works: When you pull the push pot up, B connects to A and your Coil is brought to ground, only this time it goes through a resistor. This prevents the entire signal from being grounded by placing a short on the coil, rather than a short. In return, you’ll get a stronger single-coil sound from your humbucker when decoupling.

    BACK STAGE:

Phase reversal is the trick when you want to reverse the pickup’s winding direction. To do this, you need a 2 Lead Conductor. Remember to ground the Shield (Ceiling). Here’s how to connect this:Mix Reverse Push Pull Pot Mod ModHow it works: When the switch is in the down position, White connects to White (Terminal E>F), Black connects to Black on Terminal B>C. When pulled up, Phase reverses!

    Modes:

Module 1: Two-tone hat, one push pot:

This mod is pretty cool! With this mod you can use two different tones with one pusher. When pushed down, you might have to say, .02mfd Hat, and when pulled up you can have the Fralin Magic Hat or vice versa!Two-tone Cap Push Pull Pot ModMod Push-Pull Cap two-tone

  • Incoming signal Pot at Lug 2.
  • The Sweeper, Lug 2, is connected to one side of the switch, at point E. (This whole thing can be reversed).
  • When Pushed down, Signals are being sent through Terminal F. When Pull upSignals are being sent through Terminal.
  • The other side of the switch is grounded. When you toss a Tone Pot, more of your highers will be sent to Ground, via whatever limit value you choose.
  • Push-Pull Pot Mod #2: Engage Treble Bleed

Our Fralin Volume Kit is a great Treble Bleed circuit. If you’re not familiar, the Volume Toolkit keeps the high frequencies intact when you lower the volume. But what if you need more flexibility? Here’s how you can use it by pulling up on the Push-Pull Pot: When pushed down, your volume knob will work as it should – it will sound three to the ground. Pulling up on your Push Pull Pot sends your signal through the Volume Set – your guitar is always sparkling! How it works:

  • When pushed down, your signal is going in through lug A, but it ends there, because it has nowhere to go.
  • Pull up, A>B and E>D connections are now connected, connect the Volume Kit to your circuit.
  • If you want to reverse this, simply move the Connector Cord (the two cream colored wires in the photo above) to the Lugs C & F. This will remove the Volume Unit as you pull it up.

Push-Pull Pot Mod #3: Light Switch

“Bright Switch” is a simple mod that adds a little Treble to your signal. Read more: How to resize window in windows 7 Light switch works by removing Volume Pot and Tone Pot from your signal path, these always “load” your Signal. Mostly, it connects your guitar’s receivers directly to the output jack. That’s a pretty crazy difference – your guitar is louder, brighter, and louder.Light switch Pot push pull modeBright Switch Push Pull Pot Mod How it works: Bright Switch has more parts involved, so it’s a bit more complicated. When your Push-Pull tank fails, all wiring is the same as Strat or Tele. The signal goes into Lug 1 of the Volume Pot and Lug 1 is also connected to the input of the Tone Pot. When the Push-Pull Pot is down, Lug 3 and Cap are both connected to Ground. They connect to ground via connection to the C&E terminals of the Push-Pull pot. When the switch is on, the ground lifts away from the sound and volume pot. This allows your signal to connect directly to the output jack with no load required.Note: Pickup trucks and other electronics are grounded to the back of the volume tank just like normal. 3rd lug is not connected.

Mod #4: Series/Parallel Switching for Humbuckers:

Changing your humbuckers from Series to Parallel works well for some humbuckers, especially some higher output humbuckers. You can get some “Strat Quack”, and it opens up a whole new dimension for your moron. To complete this mod you will need a humbucker with 4 wire leads. Please note that color coding is for Fralin Humbuckers only.Push-pull light switchParallel Push-Pull Module How it works: Red connects to green Green when the switch is off. This is a regular “batch” humbucker operation. By pulling the switch up, Red is now connected to White and Green is now connected to Black. The “hots” connect and the “start” connect to each other – giving you your parallelism.

    Push-Pull Pot n’ End Odds:

Before we close, here are a few things we would like to clarify.

    Notes about grounding:

You can use anywhere on the Pot’s frame to ground the signal. So when the wire is grounded, you can run it to the metal housing that houses the DPDT switch, or the side of the Pot itself. A neat little trick is to wire the ground wire on the bottom tab at the bottom of the Switch. (See image at the top of the page for what we’re talking about here).

    CTS pots:

CTS® has a new Push-Pull pot, which can make wiring a little easier. CTS has made these contacts more accessible so you can fit this pot into more guitars. However, if you’re not familiar with how it’s all connected, it can be a bit confusing. Here’s what it looks like:CTS ® Push Pull Pots - Lindy Fralin PickupsCTS Push Pot Example Instead of running your jump ropes into small lugs, you can run them to full sized holes. The order is a little different, but all the concepts are the same.Well, that’s all for now. I hope that this article has been helpful and informative. We sell Push-Pull pots on our website here.
