“Please put on Poppy,” the woman said, And keep one, but I shake my head, Then I stopped and watched as she touted there, And her face was old and well cared for; But underneath the scars that the years have made There was still a smile that wouldn’t fade. Read: why wear a poppy poemA boy whistled in the street, Jumping on carefree feet, His smile is full of joy and amusement: “Lady,” he said, “May I have one, please?” When she pinned it on, he turned and said, “Why are we wearing a poppy today?” The woman smiled wistfully, And replied, “This is Remembrance Day, And the poppy has a symbol for The brave died in the war, And because they did, you and I are both free, That’s why we wear poppy, you see. I’ve got a boy your size, With blonde hair and big blue eyes. He loves to play, dance and scream, Free as a bird he will race back. Over the years, he has learned and grown, And become a man – as you wish. But the war goes on and he has to stay, And all I can do is wait and pray. His letters tell of his terrifying plight, (I can see it still in my dreams at night) With tanks, guns and cruel barbed wire, and mines and bullets, bombs and fire. At last, at last, the war was won – And that’s why we wear a poppy, son. ” The boy turned around as if he wanted to go, Then say, “Thank you, I’m glad to know, That certainly sounds like a terrible war, But your son – is he back to normal? ” A tear rolled down her pale cheek. She shook her head but said nothing. I walked away in a kind of shame, And if you were me, you would do the same: For our thanks, in giving, without delay Even though our freedom has been bought And thousands of people have been paid. And so when we see a poppy, Let us reflect on the burden we bear, For those who have given their best, When asked to answer the call of their country. That we at home in peace can live. Since then, “Why wear poppies?” has appeared in countless newspapers and weekly magazines, including Legion Magazine in Canada, and foreign publications such as Australia’s Anzac Appeal and Scotland’s Claymore magazine. The Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Command produced the poem on slides and tapes for television and radio. And schools used “Why Wear a Poppy?” widely for their Memorial Day programs. Donald J.
