How To Add Sashing To A Quilt Block

I just finished making Cardinals, a quilt pattern from The Pattern Basket. Because this blanket has grooves around each block, it seemed like the right time to give you some tips on how to line up so your blocks stay straight.Quick refresh: Sashing refers to strips of fabric sewn between blocks and rows Read: how to add sewing fabric to a quilt block The first time I added sewing fabric to a quilt, I had no idea how important it was. What could go wrong? Well, if you’re not careful, your quilt blocks won’t line up from row to row and you’ll get a slightly inverted (no wine) effect. I didn’t notice when I sewed the broken rows together, but I don’t think it’s a big enough mistake to go back and fix (aka being lazy).Back to the Cardinals comforter. It was really important for me to match the ribbons from each row so that my blocks lined up neatly. This blanket is a template for The Granary Quilt Shop so it should look “professional” (and no more lazy blankets). However, it’s an easy process and doesn’t require much extra work.

How to line up so your blocks stay straight

Once you’ve sewn your short strips to the edges of each block and formed a row, you’ll join the rows together with a long strip of brace. This is when you need to pay attention.

  • After you sew a long ribbon to the top or bottom of a row, draw registration lines on the unflattened edge of the long ribbon.
  • Using a ruler, position its edge along the short cut strip (between blocks) and mark the edge of the long cut strip on both seams.
  • Repeat for each set of seams.
  • Join the rows together by matching the registration marks with the short seams of the next row.
  • Pin well and sew back.

This extra square piece (cornerstone) is its own little gatekeeper. You will have a seam to match the position of the corner stone instead of a long piece of tape.
