Ways of Worship: Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Goddess of beauty, love, lust, fertility, pleasure, and sexuality. Her Roman form is Venus. She was created from Titian Uranus’ severed genitals when they were thrown into the sea and mixed with sponges. The image above depicts Aphrodite rising from the sea on a giant clam when she was born. Although married to Hephestus, she remained unfaithful and her most famous consort was Ares. However, she also slept with Poseidon, Hermes, Dionysus, Adonis, and Anchises. Gotta credits the girl that she makes no distinction between immortal and mortal men. With Ares, she has Eros, Phobos, Deimos, Harmoniac, Pothos, Anteros, and Himeros. With Hermes, she has Hermaphroditus. For Poseidon, it’s Rhodos and Eryx. With Dionysus, she has Peitho, The Graces and Priapus. And finally with Anchises is Aeneas. Aphrodite is one of the 12 Olympians and resides on Mount Olympus. In the Illiad, all the gods and some mortals came to a wedding (or feast in some legends) but did not invite Eris. That was their first mistake. Eris is the Goddess of strife and discord. To solve this score, she created a golden apple engraved with the word “for the fairest” which she threw among the Goddesses. Each declared himself the fairest and tried to get the apple. To settle their argument, they went to Zeus, who basically chilled, and told the Trojan prince Paris to do it. Paris chose her as the most beautiful among Hera, Aphrodite and Athena. Each one tries to give Paris something to make him choose her. In the end, he chose Aphrodite after she promised him that he would marry the most beautiful woman on Earth, Helen. But you don’t choose a Goddess as the most beautiful unless you are ready for the scorn of a lifetime. Hera and Athena both sided with the Greeks in the Trojan War to avenge Paris for their decision. Later in the Illiad, Aphrodite persuaded, with few threats, to have sex with Paris. She also rescues Paris from a duel with King Menelaus of Sparta, who was married to Helen before Aphrodite joined. When her son Aeneas needed rescue from the hero Diomedes, she was of course recognized but Diomedes stabbed his spear into her and cut her wrist. When she went to tell Zeus, he told her that she shouldn’t put herself in danger because she was made for love, not war. However, that didn’t stop her from returning to the battle when Ares was mortally wounded in battle to save him. And her last part to play is when Hera needs a charm to make her irresistible to Zeus to trick him. In order to get the talisman, Hera lied to Aphrodite, as they were still on opposite sides in the war, but Aphrodite believed it and gave her the charm. There are many other myths that contain Aphrodite. Some of these include her marriage to Hephestus, Anchises, Adonis, and various fury myths.
