Tech Thursday #007: Spektrum Binding Procedure

With many of our projects, we set them up with a simple RC control for initial testing. This allows us to verify the robot’s electrical distribution and mechanical features are working properly before implementing more advanced control methods and/or autonomy. We tend to use Spektrum brand receivers and remotes because they are easy to use and reliable. Depending on the recipient they can bind in two different ways. The first is called SmartSafe and the second is your standard Fail Safe.

Smart Safes vs Failed Safes

Contents

Unsafe is when you force the receiver to set position before signal loss. Smart Safe holds last command for all channels except throttle. This is useful for RC aircraft in that the idea is that the aircraft holds position until the connection is re-established. For ground robots, this is not desirable. Those extra channels are usually used for arms, actuators etc. Holding the last position can cause the robot to run away from you out of control or extra arms, actuators, etc. can cause damage to the robot itself. Binding procedure

Before tying the receiver, make sure that everything is wired correctly. Follow the wiring with your eyes and make sure that the RC connectors are not upside down, the correct motors/actuators are connected to the correct channels, and the receiver is connected to the 5V source.WARNING: If using an RC receiver to connect to more than one motor controller, such as a Sabertooth or SyRen motor controller, make sure that the receiver receives only 5V from one of the dynamic controllers. muscle. Connecting the 5V terminal between multiple motor controllers may cause damage.Read more: how to use headset mic on pc without splitterNOTE: If you are using the AR9020 receiver, make sure that all satellite antennas are plugged in. Receivers will not connect properly without them. AR6110e has no satellite antenna.

Binding the Specktrum Receiver in Smart Safe Mode

  • Insert the link plug into the receiver’s BATT/BIND port. It will announce BATT/BIND on the receiver’s side.
  • Power on the receiver. This can come from the 5V terminal on the motor controller or an external battery pack. The LED on the receiver will start blinking.
  • Move the bars and spindles on the generator to your desired fail-safe locations. This will usually be the middle bar on the joysticks and the off position on your switches.
  • Drag and hold the Trainer Turn on the generator while the generator is on. Continue holding the trainer switch.
  • Power the transmitter.
  • The LEDs on the receiver and satellite will turn solid amber and the system will cone after a few seconds. Sometimes we waited up to 30-45 seconds. If this doesn’t work the first time, double-check your connections and that the braids are not connected backwards.
  • Remove the link plug from the link port.
  • Binding Recipient to Safe Mode Failed

  • Insert the link plug into the BATT/BIND port of the receiver as indicated on the side of the receiver.
  • Remove the link plug from the link port. This is a different part from Smart Safe.
  • Drag and hold the Trainer Turn on the generator while the generator is on. Continue holding the trainer switch.
  • The LEDs on the receiver and satellite will turn solid amber and the system will cone after a few seconds. Sometimes we waited up to 30-45 seconds. If this doesn’t work the first time, double-check your connections and that the braids are not connected backwards.
  • TEST!!! Be sure to check your Failed Safe constraint when you’re done.

    Advice

Here are a few tips we’ve learned from linking hundreds of these receivers.

  • If you’re having a problem, it’s most likely a wiring problem. The RC connectors are either plugged in backwards to the receiver or not properly connected to your motor controller. If you’re wiring into a terminal block, make sure your braids are boxed.
  • Ensure that all satellite antennas are installed when binding. AR9020 will NOT work without connecting them.
  • Make sure that all satellite receivers turn solid orange LEDs before turning on the training/binding switch.
  • Quick Guide – Plug in the link, power on the receiver, unplug the link, hold the trainer switch, remote control the power, wait until the receiver light is solid, release trainer switch.
