This tutorial is to help you with Project64 for Windows. Project64 was once a leading Nintendo 64 emulator. The compatibility of the game is quite good. It is conveniently equipped with its own plug-ins, which can be customized. Should you use Project64?
With all emulation services as of 2021, should you use Project64? Well, probably not. m64p (or Mupen64Plus) is the superior N64 emulator with the best and most accurate emulation. It can play games like Resident Evil 2, Rogue Squadron, Pokemon Snap, and World Driver Championship “instantly” (without having to fiddle with settings, plugins, or anything like that). to check out RetroArch, a popular multi-system emulator. It includes cores (emulators) for Mupen64Plus and ParaLLEI – the two best N64 emulators. So what about Project64? It’s not a terrible emulator. m64p is quite scarce when it comes to features, while Project64 has a lot of it. So it’s still valid in that department.
Setting
If you download Project64 from its official homepage, it’s an installation wizard that includes malware. I recommend you to download Project64 from its website. My version is a standalone program so it doesn’t have an installation wizard. Installation is simple: just extract Project64 from its zip file. Not sure how to extract zip files? I suggest Docs, Downloads or create a folder on your desktop. If you put Project64 somewhere else on your main C drive, you might be restricting it to read-only access. Notes about Project64 & ROM
- ZIP file: Project64 can open games from a zip file. So if all the N64 games you’ve downloaded are in zip files, you can get them as you would with Project64.
- RAR or 7Z file: Sometimes ROM sites prefer to distribute N64 games in “RAR” or “7Z” format. These are compressed formats like zip. Project64 can’t open them like it can with zip files. They need to be decompressed. You can use 7-Zip (free) to decompress RAR and 7Z files.
- Where to put ROM: Project64 doesn’t care where you put the N64 ROM. To be neater, I’m going to create a “Roms” folder in Project64’s folder and throw all the ROMs in there.

When using Windows 10, when loading games, Project64 can crash Windows and cause you to get a blue screen of death. Don’t panic! Restarting the computer should bring everything back to normal. I don’t know exactly why this happens to some people (it never happened to me). I can only assume that Project64 doesn’t play well with some video cards. This problem has a simple fix. All you need to do is set Project64 to run in Windows 7 emulator. Here’s how to do it:
Full screen
Press Esc or Alt + Enter to enter full screen. Press them again to return to windowed mode.

Using Windows 10, Project64 can flicker like crazy when you enter full screen mode. Fortunately, there is an easy fix for this. All you need to do is enable the graphics cache. Here’s how to do it:
Improve graphics with GLideN64
Project64 is already equipped with a good video plugin. However, if you want the absolute best video plug-in, you need the GLideN64 plug-in! Check out the sample photo on the right side to see it in action. Beautiful, isn’t it? The drawback of GLideN64 is that this beautiful high resolution graphics is quite CPU demanding. GLideN64 is for higher end computers/devices, here’s how to set it up:
- First important area (shown right): If you want sharper graphics, you can increase the resolution of Project64 in windowed and fullscreen mode. Second, if you want sharper textures, check out the Anisotrophic filter. This is the sexy feature that will produce results like the preview images above.
- The second area I circled: Want more options? Tick Show advanced simulation options and Show texture advanced options, then click OK. If you have a game running, close it. Go back to this window and you should now see two extra tabs. Check them out. With additional options, you can apply filters and further enhance textures. However, keep in mind that these options use a lot of CPU and your computer may not run the game at full speed.
Save status
Save state is a feature that saves the exact location you are in any game. You can use this feature manually by going to the File menu or with quick keyboard shortcuts. 
- Capture status: To capture a save state, go to System > Save or press F5.
- Loading status: To load a state you previously saved, go to System > Load or press F7.
- Ten slots save! Project64 allows you to save up to 10 different save states. Go to System > Current Save State to change the location.
Improved rendering of 2D games
Project64 graphics plug-ins are primarily designed for 3D games. The 2D games, however, have back seats. Some games like Ogre Battle 64 have graphical glitches around menus and dialogs. There is no complete fix for this problem, but errors can be reduced.
Fast forward
Fast forward is a game acceleration feature. You need to use Project64 version 2.0 or lower. To access it, press the F4 key. To turn off fast forward, press F4 again.

When loading a game in Project64, you are immediately taken to a tiled error screen of “Error!!” and it says “EEP-ROM SIZE IS 4K”. In my case this error message means that the game is not compatible with Project64. However, I got lucky and found that certain games worked in older versions of Project64. So I recommend you try that. You can download older versions of Project64 from my emulators page.
Q: I get ‘Error: uCode crc not found in INI’!
When loading the game in Project64, you will get the following error message. (“Xxxxxxxx” = random combination of numbers and letters) Error: uCode crc not found in INI, use currently selected uCode xxxxxxxxI trying to help someone with this. I was unable to reproduce the uCode error on my part. When I Googled it, people say this means Project64 is missing an INI file and you should download it from another site. However, I eventually found that the problem was that the game was not compatible with Project64. However, I don’t want to tell you that this is a surefire fix for the uCode bug. I would recommend both of these troubleshooting methods. So to summarize this:
