how to write a panic attack

Panic attacks are cruel, cruel things. They can affect anyone, whether they are anxious or not. But how do you write about an attack? Here’s an excerpt from one of my works in progress: Reading: how to write a panic Her heart pounded in her chest. Her hand trembled. Her legs tingled. Her vision was distorted, as if she were looking through a fisheye lens. She has to run away. She couldn’t stay near that damn house any longer. She couldn’t look at it. It’s too much of a risk for someone to step out there and try to stop her from making her decision. She was trapped. Drive, and she can cause an accident. Not driving, and she’s still too close to what happened. There. They won’t know she’s there. They won’t follow her. She was out of sight. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, her hands gripping it so tightly that her nails dug into her palms. Shortness of breath. Really difficult. As if she’d just run the London Marathon, she cried harder, her chest tightening as bile rose in her throat.

After a panic attack

Panic attacks take a lot of energy and are exhausting. JK Rowling had something to say when she wrote about eating chocolate after facing dementia: getting food into her system. someone who has just experienced a panic attack is a VERY good idea. It can help calm them down by regulating their blood sugar. A short nap also helps. The first thing NOT to do — unless the people around your character are having an unsympathetic panic attack — is to tell the person to ‘calm down’. This makes them worse. Each time, if the character knows they’re being unreasonable, it makes them angry. If they don’t know, it can freak them out even more.

Activate panic attack

Anything can trigger a panic attack. It depends on your personality. Some people have more panic attacks than others. It depends on a) //s what their trigger is and b) how often they are exposed to it/them. put them away. There is not always a definitive answer, if they have a nervous attitude, it could be something as trivial as the way another character said something. Panic attacks can affect anyone. All they need is the right trigger. It’s not something they fear, it could be something they hate, or even something they love. Love can very quickly turn to fear/anxiety/panic if the character is in an unknown situation.
