I have a few pairs of straight leg/comfort mom/boyfriend jeans, and I’ve never liked the way they look with my ankle boots. This begins a quest to find the right pair of jeans. Entered three pairs of jeans that matched the bill and have since been in constant rotation. Here’s what made the difference:

  • You want a straight-leg skinny/straight-faced pair of jeans, i.e. look for a narrower cut as opposed to a wider, looser cut of straight leg jeans.
  • Length problem! You don’t want a capri jean here. Find a pair of jeans that are just right above your ankle bone. I found out this was actually my main problem. I’m tall, and all the straight leg jeans I own are short due to my height. They don’t cut it.

I think what works best for me when a pair of straight leg jeans with boots is between 28.5-29.5. For me, this means paying some because it’s harder to find. I’m wearing Paige Sarah Slim jeans (28.5 inches in), GRLFRND Karolina tall “thin” (so called even though it looks like a 29.5 inch straight cut in the trouser leg even though it comes in shorter versions) over), and Madewell Stovepipe in high (29.5 inseam). If you’re looking and shorter than me, I’d recommend Levi’s 501 “skinny”, Levi’s in general, or Madewell straight denim in regular or short tube lengths. I like one that isn’t all cotton just for comfort.

    In this example, I’m wearing the “skinny” GRLFRND Karolina heels with a 29.5-inch inner line. Since they are a bit longer, I need to wrap them a bit.     All in all, there are a few things I should avoid when considering how to wear ankle boots with straight leg jeans. The main thing that I mentioned in the jeans section and that is to avoid wearing wide leg/boyfriend style jeans. I have and love these styles of jeans, but I tend to wear them with a slicker mule or one side as opposed to a boot. ankle as opposed to a real ankle boot. Note that all mine have a taller and narrower launch shaft. This helps them look a bit more streamlined and flattering with their straight legs.
