Wick trimmer
If you’ve read our Candle Care 101 program, you know that pruning the wick is an important first step in candle care. You want to cut the wick about ¼” long before the first burn and after each subsequent burn. Pruning the wick helps to prevent “fungi” i.e. the small black tubers that form after burning. Fungi can cause your wick to smoke, create soot, and flare. All of these can result in candles that burn unevenly, ignite unsafely, and look dirty. In this case, you don’t want to cut the wick. It’s important to keep the wick short, it’s more important to make sure your wick is long enough to light up. The ¼” rule will help you decide whether or not to cut that wick.

Well, we have something for you – a candle blower! Candle burners have been used for centuries to quickly and cleanly extinguish candle flames. To use the vaporizer, simply place the bell on the flame and wait until the flame goes out. Be careful not to immerse the bell in the wax. It needs to move slightly over the surface of the wax and eventually you may see a small puff of smoke emerge from the bell, signaling that the flame has gone out. Be careful not to touch the bell afterwards, as it could get hot.
The Wicked Dipper
The wick is a great all-purpose candle care tool. You can use it to extinguish flames, move displaced wicks, and remove debris from wax puddles. submerged in liquid wax. This will destroy the flame without producing any smoke. Remember to pull the wick out of the wax and straighten it immediately so it doesn’t lose or drift off center. Putting the wick in its own wax actually conditions the wick, making it easier to light and burn cleaner on subsequent burns. Sometimes a bit of a burning wick or a piece of a match can fall into a puddle of wax. After you’ve extinguished the candle, use the wick to carefully remove any debris. To remedy this, extinguish the flame and then carefully push the wick at the base in contact with the dipper. You have now completed our 201 candle class.
