First, let’s take a look at the rug that inspired my DIY outdoor rug project. This template from Zinc door was right up my alley – however the $358 price tag was not. I mean, we only spend 90% of our budget on wood, paint and nails – which would have blown me over budget in a split second.
However, this rug is $20 at my local Walmart. Yes, Walmart. It doesn’t say outdoor rug, but it’s made from the same material as my indoor/outdoor rug in our half bath from Ballard’s – and it’s under one roof, so I will try it out. $20 isn’t worth crying about if it’s destroyed in six months.
How to paint an outdoor rug
In addition to the rug, I also use:
- Scrap cardboard from an old box
- Pencil
- Cereal bowl
- Chalk
- Water (in cereal bowl)
- Fabric paint
- Soft paint brush
- Scissors
- Measuring tape

I start by tracing my bowl four times in a square, with the sides touching.
Next, I used scissors to cut according to the picture I just drew, right to the position where the circles met on the outside, like a 4-leaf clover.
Next measure your rug and place the pattern in the center. Using CHEAP – NO Dust -, mark around the pattern, then move it right and left, forming a straight line all over the rug. Use a bowl of water to soak up the powder, as dry chalk won’t color well – but wet chalk does. It will take a lot of chalk, so remember to prepare 5-6 sticks to make sure you have enough. Then using your brush, paint right over the lines, I used my brush as a width guide. It won’t be perfect – but that’s okay, it just adds charm! Use the bristles to brush the paint onto the rug a bit so it has a pretty solid straight line.
I draw a line, draw it, draw a line, draw it, over and over until I’m done. You’ll probably have a chalk stain, but the vacuum will clean it up as soon as the paint dries.
