Boil distilled water in a large pot. It is important to use distilled water, as tap water can contain bacteria or trace metals. When the water boils, stir in the flour mixture. Keep the mixture at about 160°F and stir the soap periodically until the mixture is completely dissolved. That can take up to 8 hours depending on how much soap you’re diluting. Add a small amount of the brine solution directly to the soap base and stir. The amount you use will depend on how thick of soap you want. Sometimes, you don’t need to thicken the soap with a saline solution because the fragrance or essential oils will help. Just like cold-treated soaps, perfumes and essential oils can cause liquid soaps to “accelerate” and become thick. Fragrance and essential oils can also affect the clarity and color of the base coat. I always like to make a small batch test the fragrance or essential oil in liquid soap to see how it works. Also, I recommend adding your fragrance before thickening the soap with salt water. After adding your fragrance, you may find it becomes thick enough.
Above, I added 3 mL of lemongrass essential oil to 8 ounces of Stephenson Organic Castile Liquid Soap. When I stirred the essential oils in, the soap base became slightly cloudy and immediately began to thicken. I decided not to thicken this batch any more with the brine solution, as it becomes thick and nice with the essential oils. The next day, the cloudiness from the lemongrass essential oil disappeared and the liquid soap looked nice and clear (pictured below). Crothix is very easy to use; Just add it to your room temperature soap base and mix until fully combined. No heating required. Just like using a brine solution, I recommend doing a small test batch to find the right amount of crothix for your project. The recommended crothix application rate is 1-8% of the total weight of your product.
If you’ve never tried changing the consistency of a ready-made liquid soap base, you might find it super easy! Be sure to use only table salt and distilled water, and add very little solution to the liquid soap base.
