How To Test Coax Cable For Loss

RF coaxial cable is used to transmit signal from radio or TV transmitter to antenna. These wires are made of metal wire inside and metal braid outside to form a resistive coaxial. Sometimes, due to surrounding situations, the coax cable is damaged like a cut or cracks in its layers. If this problem arises, it poses a risk to the operation of the generator. Coaxial Cable. Here, I provide some reliable methods to test coax cable for signal loss. Let’s move on to the explanation. Read: how to check if the coax cable is lost

There are several methods to test coax cable to receive reliable signal frequency. I will explain them here:

1) How to test coax cable with multimeter

Follow the steps below to test the coax cable with the help of a multimeter and probe.

  • Make both ends of the coil unstuck by disconnecting it from devices such as cable splittersTV or whatever else you’ve cabled to.
  • Now, roll both ends to comfortably take measurements through the multimeter.
  • Take the test probe and connect its wires to specific ends of the multimeter (red positive to the jack marked ‘+’ and black negative to the ‘COM’ jack).
  • Touch one of the leads to the outer metal part of the PL-259 plug and the second to the center pin. If you don’t hear any sound, it means the conductor is not aligned.
  • Now, on the multimeter settings, set the dial option to ‘Continuous’ or ‘CONT’ to take measurements.
  • To check if the continuity test is working, make contact with both ends of the probe. If the alarm sounds, the device is working properly.
  • Connect the negative end of multimeter Probe wire/pin center on one side of coaxial. Make sure it doesn’t touch the outer layer.
  • Connect the positive end of the multimeter probe to the center wire/pin on the other side of the coaxial. The same precautions you took with the positive tip should be taken.
  • After doing this, analyze the tone. If it is coming from the multimeter’s speaker, then that means the coax cable is working correctly and the signal is not going through it.
  • If you are using a coaxial connector, touch its housing with the negative probe. If you are not using a connector, touch the braided outer wire with the negative probe. Hold the positive end of the probe in the same position that you placed in the previous step.
  • Check if the tone is heard from the multimeter’s internal speaker. There should be no sound because there is no electrical connection between the center wire/terminal and the outer jacket/wire. If you hear any noise, it means the insulation in the coax cable has broken and that is the reason for the loss of signal. You’re better off replacing the wire with a good quality coax cable.

    2) How to track a coaxial cable

Once you’ve made coax connections in your different rooms across floors, ceilings, walls, etc., it becomes difficult to trace the coax cable path. So, before testing coax or setting up a new TV or home theater system, you need to monitor the coax cable. Follow the steps below to perform coaxial cable detection.

  • Collect necessary tools such as continuity tester and explorer for coax and a masking tape to locate coaxial cable paths.
  • If you have multiple coax cables with splitter support, especially when they’re in the wall, it’s a good idea to combine the ends of a particular coax cable. Using a coaxial cable tester, you can do this job easily. Connect one end of the test device to a wall outlet and bring the other end to the point where all cables are meeting. Touch each cable pin and when it sounds, you’ve found the right cable.coax cable tracking
  • If the other end of coax cable is connected to the satellite dish or your roof top antenna, you can then use a multimeter & aluminum coil to monitor the right ends of a particular coax cable. Fill in aluminum foil at the end of the coax cable. When you touch the multimeter probe on the right end of the coax cable, the meter will read ‘0’ and for all other cables you will see some different readings.
  • A coaxial cable mapper can be used to monitor and evaluate coaxial cables located at multiple locations.
  • If you have lost your coax cable in your wall or attic, then you can get the help of a coaxial ink probe to track the cable. When it finds the coax cable inside the wall, it makes a loud noise and you can easily locate the cable.
