The damn thing happened – How to prevent it from happening where it’s not intended. If you want to stop your dog from urinating or pooping in places he doesn’t want to, read on for our top eco-friendly DIY tips on how to prevent peeing and pooping outdoors. We have to admit we’ve been very lucky with our dog Willie. He is easily trained in the house and has never had a moment of embarrassment in the house. We hope that like the two cats he lives with Willie will choose the beds in the garden to fertilize his pet dogs and pee ……. We were wrong! This is no such an issue except that the only preferred spot he has chosen on our paved patio (especially during the rainy winter months) is the covered area just outside the door. Our outdoor storage and laundry… .. Ever step in dog doo in your ugg boots? …… Unhappy. After a number of unsuccessful uses, we found some winning solutions that match our favorite eco-friendly properties. Of course no two dogs are alike, so you may want to experiment to see what works for you. This is our favorite and professional and child’s. WINNER 1 – Vinegar!!! Exactly $1.20 for 100mls stop genius!Simply spray or pour vinegar over the fertilizer area. Dogs are very sensitive to odors and hate the smell of vinegar. Willie now refuses to go anywhere we have sprayed it. If your area is covered, you will need to re-treat the area about once a week until the dog is notified. If your yard gets wet, you’ll need to repeat the treatment immediately after showering. You can dilute the vinegar with water when repeating the treatments, your dog will remember the smell vaguely and not go there. Read more: how to draw shopkins step by stepPROS
- Dog friendly! Most importantly, even though your dog may hate the smell, it won’t harm them. Vinegar is a strong smell they hate but it doesn’t cause any side effects. They just need to stay away. (Also non-toxic to cats and humans)
- Price! This shiz is as cheap as chips, it works just as well as commercial formulas that can cost $20 or more for just 500ml and is full of nasty stinky chemicals.
- Environmentally friendly, if vinegar gets into the environment, in our vapor form as a solution in water, it will quickly break down into harmless substances.
- Fragrance is low for humans. While not the most pleasant smell to the human nose, vinegar dissolves quickly and doesn’t have the harsh chemical vapors of commercial waterproofing products.

- Can only be used on non-organic surfaces!! Do not use this substance on beds or grass in your garden as it will kill it.
- With this smell, you’ll have to get used to having part of your yard smell like mild vinegar for a while. Honestly though if you gave me a choice between vinegar and dog toilet!!!
- You need to continue to treat the area so your dog doesn’t get into the habit of going there.
2 – Lemongrass Essential Oil Priced at $5.75 for 100ml it’s not as cheap as Vinegar but still cheaper than store-bought chemical solutions! Your dog, hates this smell, trust us…. Tried testing… was snubbed by Willie for hours as punishment.Read more: how to draw shopkins step by stepPROS
- A++ on the environment, you can even use lemongrass essential oil on your plants or lawn (water it down) All natural, this tool is actually made from lemongrass grass. It will also keep flies and mozzies flying.
- The smell is strong but it is really pleasant and fades away for the nose after a short time.
- Stay strong! As an oil, it coats surfaces and plants and persists for some time after rain. This means less reapplying.

- You still have to reapply after the rain and time to keep the puppies active until they break the habit. At $5.75 for 100mls, even with water pouring in, it’s not as cost-effective as vinegar.
- Be careful, lemongrass in small doses is slightly non-toxic but if a small dog ingests a few lemongrass seeds from a puddle, it will make them feel quite ill.
3 – Cayenne Pepper / Chili Powder Sprinkle cayenne pepper or chili powder over the affected area. If the area is non-organic, e.g. concrete, brick, etc., wash it with vinegar or ammonia first to remove the enticing urine odor. You can also mix pepper/chili pepper with some water and liquid soap for better adhesion.Read more: how to draw shopkins step by stepPROS
- Your dog will really regret sniffing before they pee/poop there and will most likely never try again.
- Inexpensive a few treatments will get the message across. Unless you deal with a large area, you should only consider a few 10g containers that cost around $2.50 each.
- Environmentally friendly, this tool does no harm to plants.
