How To Silver Leaf A Mirror Frame
Shopping for craft stores for your next project is always fun. They have a lot of different things that you can use to get creative at home. Have you ever tried silver or gold foil? Also known as silver foil, this is an easy and dynamic way to bring shine and texture to your next makeup. I’ve seen it used on furniture, in art and more, and today I’m going to show you how to silver mirror frame.

GuideThis is the mirror I used for this project. I bought it at a flea market for just $5 and decided it would be perfect for our existing basement bathroom remodel.
First, prepare your frame by gluing around the inside of the frame, where it meets the mirror. This is to prevent any silver foil from sticking to the mirror. Then you start the process of gluing and gluing the leaves. They sell special foil glue, but I know it’s pretty similar to decorative glue, so I used what I had. I always try to save a few dollars when working on projects. No need to spend money buying unnecessary items, here you can see the glue on the shiny frame {far left}. Simply brush it with a small paint brush. The foil comes in a package with a thin layer of foil between the foil for protection. Use a piece of waxed paper to “separate” the foil from the tissue and it will connect to it via static electricity. Then you have a part all ready to go into your frame.
Carefully place the leaf on the frame you glued. Now this is where it can get frustrating. It’s rare that the leaf will do what you want it to do. This thing is so light, it floats in the air and has a mind of its own. Do your best to stick to the frame smoothly, remembering that you can always patch it up later. Use a light brush to smooth and once the foil has adhered to the glue you can pull back your wax paper and voila! You have completed your first work. Note that it’s not perfect yet? So you know what to expect, again, it’s rare for a leaf to turn out well and smoothly. That seems to be just the nature of the foil. But work on it and I promise you’ll still have a beautiful project in the end.

Then go back and apply more glue and foil to the holes. You’ll probably see some seams, but that’s okay. I think it gives character to the puzzle piece. Silver foil is very fragile so you want to protect it from abrasion and from peeling off. And here’s my finished picture frame hanging in the bathroom between our new lamps on the plank wall.

And it perfectly matches the new chrome lamp and faucet we installed last week. After using a coupon for the leaf, this project only cost me about $12 total. Pretty good for a DIY project, right?
