How To Sew A Crib Bumper And A Baby Blanket
Video How to make a crib mattressI’m so happy to finally share my first sewing project for our future baby with you! I don’t intend to decorate a room into a nursery Read: how to make crib mattresses First, because we only have a 3 bedroom house and second because I decorated, painted, made curtains for my first two… and they prefer to sleep together! My son has no interest in sleeping in a girly pink room (you can see some pics HERE if you like). I still want to do something special for him. And, as a crafter, it means MAKE something! A new crib set is the perfect project, in addition to sewing them, I also make designs out of peacock feathers! That makes the case and blanket even more special and personal! I was able to create this unique crib bedding set thanks to Contrado! Those people are awesome! They can print any design on (almost) any fabric, so if you’re looking to create your own fabric pattern, I would definitely recommend them. The design and colors were exactly what I expected and delivery was quick (which is quite special since I live in Mexico and the delivery service used is pretty dangerous). I love that my baby will have a unique crib set, sewn and designed by his mom!I was lucky enough to find a suitable polka dot fabric for the inside of the case. I also took some white fleece fabric to make a cute blanket. Besides the fabric, you’ll need ribbon, matching thread, and lining. The first thing you need to do is put the crib inside the dimensions. Our dimensions are 120 cm x 60 cm (47 in. X 24 in.) To make the case, I used 2 meters (2 yards) of fabric. You need to cut 4 rectangles in the outer fabric. All rectangles will have the same height of 33cm / 13 inches. The first 2 rectangles should be the length of the crib + 1 1/2 inch or 4cm. The remaining 2 rectangles should be the width of the crib + 1 1/2 inches or 4cm. I hope it’s not confusing, I give you an example: Metric: My crib dimensions are 120 cm x 60 cm. So I will have 2 large fabric rectangles of 124 x 33 cm and 2 small rectangles of 64 x 33 cm. Then you have to cut 4 identical rectangles on the inner fabric. So you will end up with 4 long rectangles and 4 short rectangles (2 in each canvas). Our system: My crib size is 47in X 24in. So I will have 2 large 48 1/2 inch x 13 inch fabric rectangles and 2 small 25 1/2 inch x 13 inch rectangles. Then you have to cut 4 identical rectangles on the inner fabric. So you will end up with 4 long rectangles and 4 short rectangles (2 in each canvas).Read more: How to form a clan in real life Place two small rectangles on top of each other, facing right inward. Pin the edges together. Cut 4 pieces of ribbon about 40 cm / 15 in. Place a segment in each corner between each layer of fabric and pins.Sew 3 sides, leave 1 small side open. Repeat to create a second small bumper. You can repeat the exact same process to sew a long case. You will only add two extra ribbons in the center. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon measuring 80 cm / 30 in. Fold them to the center and place them between the layers of fabric in the center of the rectangles. These ribbons will allow you to attach the bumper to the crib and keep it from curling.Turn your fabric rectangles right-side out. Cut the foam lining to the same size as the rectangles and fill them with foam.Fold the edge inward, pin and sew. Once your four rectangles have been filled with foam and closed, you can attach them to the crib forming pretty knots with ribbon.Start covering your baby with a blanket. I choose a large size, you can reduce the size if you want for a newborn baby. Cut a 1m x 1m (1 ft x 1 ft) square from the fabric and a square of fleece.Place the sheets on top of each other, right side in. Pin the edges and sew them together, leaving a termite-free space of 20 cm / 10 in.Turn right side out, pin the opening and sew a few stitches to close.Read more: How to make tap water safe for aquariums Make an extra seam on all perimeters of the blanket, 1cm (1/2 in.) more or less from the edges.
