Here are 4 simple steps to receiving The Baptism of the Holy Spirit:
Contents
1) You have to be born again first.
In Acts 8 we see Philip preach the Gospel in Samaria where vast crowds believe in Jesus and are born again. Once they are born again, the apostles in Jerusalem send Peter and John to go there and baptise these new believers in the Holy Spirit.Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.Reading: how to recieve the baptism of the holy spiritThese people didn’t receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit when they got born again. They got born again first and only after that did they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We can see from this Scripture that salvation and Holy Spirit baptism are two distinct events. Just because someone gets saved doesn’t mean that they automatically are baptised in the Holy Spirit. Salvation is being born of the Spirit. Holy Spirit baptism is being filled with the Spirit. Never assume that just because someone is born of the Spirit that they are filled with the Spirit. In this case we see that they got saved but they were clearly not filled with the Spirit until the apostles came up from Jerusalem and prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit. We see a similar thing in Acts 19. Paul the apostle meets some people in Ephesus who were religious, however they had never been born again or received the Holy Spirit. Paul knew that before they could be baptised in the Holy Spirit they had to get saved first.Acts 19:1-6 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.Paul spoke to them as though it were normal for everyone who believes in Jesus to also receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”And this is what we see happen. Once they believed in Jesus, Paul then laid his hands on them and they were baptised with the Holy Spirit.Question: Is it possible to receive the Holy Spirit at the very same moment a person gets saved? Yes it is, and we have a great example of this happening in Acts 10.Peter the apostle is invited to preach the Gospel in Caesarea to a man named Cornelius. He and all his relatives were devout religious people, but they had never heard the Gospel or received Jesus.Peter goes to their house to preach the Gospel and look what happens:Acts 10:44- 46 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised (Jews) who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God.Notice that as they were listening, the Holy Spirit was poured out on them. Salvation and Holy Spirit baptism happened at the same time!As they heard the Gospel faith arose in their hearts to be saved and they were instantly born again. At that very moment of being born again, we see that the Spirit was poured out upon them. What we learn from these clear biblical examples is firstly, a person has to be born again before they can be baptised in the Holy Spirit. Secondly, that the baptism of the Holy Spirit can happen as people get saved but sometimes doesn’t and therefore people still need to be baptised in the Holy Spirit after they get saved. Why doesn’t it always happen at salvation? We don’t know. Sometimes that’s just how the Holy Spirit works. The good news is that if you are born again, and haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet, you most certainly can and you are very close to receiving Him!You are ready for the next step…
2) Build your faith to receive the Holy Spirit.

God has promised the Holy Spirit to everyone – through Jesus. The following scriptures will build your faith:The Holy Spirit is promised to whoever believes in Jesus:
- John 7:38-39 Whoever believes in me (Jesus), as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
The Holy Spirit promised to Christs’ disciples:
- Acts 1:4-8 And while staying with them he (Jesus) ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
- Luke 3:16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
The coming of the Holy Spirit:
- Acts 2:1- 4 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
- The whole church was filled. Everyone. All of them!
- If you believe in Jesus you are a part of the “all”.
God’s original promise to pour out the Spirit upon all flesh:
- Acts 2:16-17 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,”
Once Jesus was glorified in heaven He could send the Holy Spirit just like He promised:
- John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
- Acts 2:32-33 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
The promise of the Spirit to ALL who repent and believe in Jesus:
- Acts 2:37-39 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Anyone and everyone who believes in Jesus is included in the “all” and “everyone”.That means if you are born again then you are promised the Holy Spirit and you can receive Him. All you need to do is ASK and RECEIVE!Luke 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”Now I’m going to show you how to receive the Holy Spirit.
3) Receive through the laying on of hands.
If you didn’t receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit when you believed in Jesus then there is a way to receive Him right now!Believers who are baptised in the Holy Spirit can lay their hands on you and baptise you in the Holy Spirit. This is the impartation and transference of the Spirit to people. We see this happening a number of times in the Bible.Acts 8:17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them,Acts 9:17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”If you are born again and want to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, all you need to do is have someone who is full of the Spirit lay their hands on you and release the Spirit to you. What should you do when people are laying their hands on you?
4) Expect to receive the Holy Spirit.

Simply, by faith, expect to receive Him.“Thank you Father, you promised to send the Holy Spirit to all who believe in Jesus. I have believed and received Jesus, and now I ask you for the Holy Spirit. Please baptise me with the Holy Spirit.”Remember:John 7:38-39 “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive,”I’d encourage you to ask a Spirit filled believer to pray for you and lay hands on you and impart the baptism of the Holy Spirit to you. Ask one of the leaders at your church to do this, or your home group, or a family member who knows about this.
Or you can do this:
Even though the laying on of hands is very effective and biblical, it doesn’t always have to be through the laying on of hands. If you have faith to receive right now, you can simply ask Jesus to baptise you with the Holy Spirit at this very moment! Why wait? God wants to fill you? The only qualification is to be born again. If you are then you are ready to receive. The Early Church received the Holy Spirit as they were worshiping and waiting for Him in the upper room with no hands laid on them. The household of Cornelius received the Holy Spirit as they were listening to the Gospel with no hands laid on. And you can receive the Holy Spirit right now where you are simply by asking Jesus to come and baptise you with the Holy Spirit right now. Then just open your heart to receive Him.Now, as you receive the Holy Spirit just respond to whatever you feel Him wanting to do in you. You may feel a desire to praise God or worship Jesus. You may feel to start prophesying and declaring the greatness of God. You may feel to start praying in tongues like the early church. Whatever the Holy Spirit prompts you to do just do it because now you are becoming Spirit-led.Regarding tongues, this is a brand new spiritual language you receive as a Spirit filled believer. It is biblical and very often follows the infilling of the Holy Spirit.Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.Acts 10:45-46 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. I have a video all about tongues that will help you understand why they are important and powerful and how to get them operating in your life. (How to activate the Gift of Tongues right now.)
So what to do now that you have been baptised in the Holy Spirit?
Get to know Him. He is God the Holy Spirit and He now lives in you!Learn all about what the Bible has to say about Him and also just get to know Him personally as you would a close friend.John 14:15-17 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper (Holy Spirit), to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.The Holy Spirit has a very important and powerful ministry in your life. He wants to teach you more about Jesus and help you be a powerful witness for Him. From the moment you receive the Holy Spirit, you can start to get to know Him and He’s going to lead you in the best life that God has for you!Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”By Ryan Rufus.
