How To Put Vinegar In Rv Hot Water Heater
Every year, I drain our Suburban 6 gallon RV water heater for cleaning and maintenance. During this service, I inspect the anode rod for damage, replace if necessary, and rinse the inside of the vessel thoroughly with a wash wand. I regularly see a lot of calcium and mineral deposits in the discharge water and on the anode bar.
Unlike our soft rainwater reservoirs in the Pacific Northwest, the desert’s water usually comes from underground wells and contains all kinds of salts and minerals in relatively high concentrations. Once the electrical element of our water heater got scaled, it started squeaking! For years, I’ve heard of using vinegar in RV plumbing to dissolve calcium deposits, especially in the tank of a water heater. This year, I decided to give it a try.

Read more: All about empanadas: A guide to empanada 101Safety Note: Before working on the water heater, make sure the water heater is sufficiently cooled and the power and LP gas supply turned off.There are several ways to get vinegar into the tank:
- Add the vinegar water mixture to the RV’s fresh water tank then pump it in. (However, some RVs don’t have a gravity feed port.)
- Remove the pressure relief valve at the top of the water heater and pour in the vinegar mixture using a funnel. (Can be a pain to remove)
- Add it using an RV freezer (If you have one, definitely the easiest way)
Since I recently installed myself an RV freezer, that’s how I chose to add it. I couldn’t find a clear consensus on how much vinegar to use, so I decided to choose three parts vinegar to four parts water. I think that should be enough to do the trick.
After performing routine water heater maintenance, I set the button to empty the tank. I filled a 7-gallon portable freshwater tank that we bring with us to stock fish with a vinegar/water mix. Then, suck the mixture into the RV water heater using the RV’s 12 volt water pump.Read more: How to create a boss-like bouncy hairstyle – 7 trendy ideas Next, I turned on the power to the water heater. until the vinegar mixture thickens. and warm then let stand for 4 or 5 hours. Finally, I pulled out the anode rod again and let the tank drain.
Result: I removed more residue from the hot water tank and was pleased to see that the vinegar had removed most of the deposits on the anode rod. Which means it has to be done the same for the inside of the tank and the electrical element.
