How To Put On A Donjoy Knee Brace
The Donjoy Armor Knee brace is the industry standard for protecting and supporting the knee during physical activity, helping athletes push themselves with confidence without fear of injury. This knee brace can enhance support and safety for the user, but these benefits are jeopardized if proper care and attention is not given during sizing. A properly sized knee brace will provide support and protection where it is needed most, but with the wrong size, the brace can slip and lose many of its key attributes.
Sizing Your Knee Splint
Contents
Sizing the Donjoy Armor braces is quick and easy, with three key measurements taken to ensure a perfect fit. The three required measurements are described and shown below.
- Above the Knee – This measurement should be taken 15cm (6 inches) above the knee. Wrap the measuring device around the thigh at this point and record the circumference of that area. Please see the image below for more details.
- At the center of the knee – This measurement is taken at the center of the knee, directly above the kneecap or patella. Wrap the tape measure around the kneecap and over the back of the knee, recording the circumference.
- Below Knees – For this final measurement, wrap the tape measure around your calves 15cm (6 inches) below the knee. Again, record the circumference, and you’re done measuring.
Important tips
After you’ve accurately measured your foot at thighs, knees, and calves, and have ordered the right size for you, you’re ready to try the brace and feel the support for yourself. Before you get started, we’ve put together a few key tips to make your app run as smoothly as possible:
Application Instructions for Knee Splints Step by Step
Now that you’re prepared for proper application of your knee brace, we’ve prepared step-by-step instructions to ensure perfect application, every time.
Step 1: Initial preparation
A. To begin the application, sit on the edge of your sturdy surface in a stable position. Make sure your knees are slightly bent (45°) and place your feet flat on the floor (Figure 1).
Step 2: Position of brace and hinge
A. Now that you are seated in the proper position, remove the belt and step over the brace (Figure 2A).B. Holding the brace by the hinge, center the hinge 1 inch on top of your knee. Then, push the hinge slightly behind the midline of the knee (Figure 2B).
Step 3: Anti-migration band position
A. Secure the anti-migration band around the calf’s legs with a snug fit. Make sure the band is in full contact with the leg and does not wrap around the outside of the brace (Figure 3). Please note that the anti-move band is not designed to be threaded through any plastic buckles and must wrap directly around your foot. Read more: how to make love perfumeB. Please note that the anti-move band is connected to both Strap #4 and Strap #5. Neither of these straps should be fastened until later in the mounting process.
Step 4: Seat belt #1 and #2
A. Secure strap #1 (which is the lowest strap on the calf until it fits snugly (Figure 4A). B. Secure top thigh strap #2, but not too tight as this could cause the brace to slip off. Down (Figure 4B) .C Again, after this step, push the hinge slightly behind your mid-knee line.
Step 5: Seat belts #3 and #4
A. Firmly hold the thigh strap under number 3 until you feel a snug fit (Figure 5A).B. Hold the front calf strap firmly above the number 4 until it fits snugly. (Figure 5B). Strap #4 can be found in front of the anti-move band and must be threaded through the loops on the band. This step is especially important for patients with an ACL injury.
Step 6: Fix strap #5
A. Secure the rear calf strap #5, which is again connected to the anti-mobility strap, until a comfortable fit (Figure 6). B. After the first installation of this strap, you do not need to remove it. It will work to keep the anti-migration strip intact.
Step 7: Check the fit and tighten again
A. At this point, your brace should fit your leg snugly. Arthritis patients will feel a slight push in one knee. If you did it correctly, your brace should now be fully assembled (Figure 7).
Additional troubleshooting tips
If you’ve followed these instructions and still find that your knee brace isn’t fitting properly, here are some additional tips to help you.
1: Ensure Proper Hinge Position

If the hinge of your knee brace is too far forward, you should loosen all the straps to allow for an adjustment. You can then push the hinges back while lifting them up a bit. Once done, re-tie all the straps and reassess your fit.
2: Ensure proper Alignment
A. For a fitted knee brace, the hinge should be slightly above your knee cap. The pads will make full contact with your foot. If the brace is too low down your leg, loosen all the straps. Then, raise the hinge to your foot, tighten the straps, and reassess your fit.
3: Guaranteed Fit
A. If no errors were made in the sizing and your knee brace fits snugly, there shouldn’t be a large disparity between the brace and your foot. The pads will make full contact with your foot. If the brace you have chosen is too large, you can add a spacer to improve your fit. Alternatively, you can call us at Health and Care to discuss a replacement with a more suitable size.
4: Try again
Due to the highly technical design of the Donjoy Armor braces, they require a more precise fit to ensure that you are getting the optimal level of support. This of course means that applying a brace can take some getting used to before you can find the perfect fit. If you follow this guide and find that the brace doesn’t fit, it doesn’t necessarily mean you bought the wrong size. Try fitting your brackets two or three more times to make sure you understand the application process.
