Whichever type you choose, your hole should be no more than 12 inches wide. The variable hole size can really help you to catch different kinds of fish. Smaller holes, about 4-5 inches, are suitable for bluegills, crappie and perch. The 8-inch holes are suitable for trout, northern pike, and walleye. It is also the commonly used size for tips.
