PROFESSIONAL PLANTS

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root pot. More importantly: Make sure the hole is no deeper than the top of the plant’s roots. It’s best to plant the tree one to three inches above the surrounding ground, as the plant can die.

Place the plant on solid soil. Do not dig the soil under the roots and do not add compost, bark or any other additives. Lift and carry the tree with the roots, not the trunk.

Fill only with the soil you dug for the hole.

Fill with soil around the roots.

Water thoroughly to remove air pockets.

Use soil to build a 4-inch layer of soil around the edge of the hole. Add a layer of mulch 4 to 6 inches long inside the ring, but never cover the root flare.

Remove the twine bonding burlap around the roots.

Do not fertilize the plant after you plant it. Spring is the time to fertilize, even then lightly fertilize as fertilizer can burn newly planted roots.
Piling the tree is considered a last resort. Some experts believe that staking weakens a tree’s ability to grow on its own after the tree is cut down and can also damage the bark, making it easier for pests to enter.
