Or maybe your Bible has no preset ribbon bookmarks at all! This simple project can fix that. Learn how to make bookmarks with the Bible’s ribbon so you can easily bookmark multiple passages at once. They are obtained quickly and inexpensively, so they are also suitable for “bulk” gift needs (such as for a Sunday School classroom).
Create Biblical Ribbon Bookmarks
To get started, gather your materials. You will need:
- length of ribbon – 12 inches seems to be a good length. I prefer the 1/8 inch ribbon, as it’s narrow enough to allow for several ribbons per bookmark and mark pages easily, but I have a friend who uses printed grosgrain ribbons to create “funny” bookmarks. Mine is satin ribbon, bought on sale. I bought these a long time ago, so I can’t remember for sure, but I think they were ten cents a tube, for a ten-foot tube. That makes them really inexpensive.
- card strip – I used the standard cardstock, and it seems to work fine. Index card securities (110 pounds) could be even better. My strips are just one inch wide strips cut across from a piece of cardboard, so they are 8-1/2″ long. That length seems to work fine. One inch is a good width for most Bibles, but check the spine width of your Bible before proceeding, to make sure this will fit. Some thicker study Bibles may contain an inch and a half long strip; some slim or compact bibles probably need something closer to 3/4 ″. (You only need a strip of tags for bookmarking; I made several tags in one session, so I just cut the whole sheet of tags.)
- glue – I used glue stick, and it works great.
- scissors
- pencil and rulerif you haven’t already cut your cardstock into strips
To start, fold your keycard strip in half, to the side (not lengthwise). It should still be an inch wide, but effectively half as long. (Pardon the photos. It’s hard to get a picture of something a person is doing with his or her own hands without being noticeably blurred from being so close.)

Start gluing the ends of the ribbon in turn to the glued surface. The longer ends should extend beyond the edge of the strip. I found that pressing down on the ribbon with my fingernails helped secure it.
Once all the ribbons are glued on, it should look like this:
Turn the whole thing upside down and apply glue on the inside of the bookmark, on the opposite side of the fold (the side without the ribbon).

Press it down firmly, paying special attention to the edges – especially the edge where the ribbons are. At this point, I like to glue the inside of a heavy book, up to the edge of the cardboard, to keep them closed while they finish drying.
When the bookmark dries, the bookmark is officially complete, although you may want to trim the remaining ends of the ribbons if they are uneven. Cutting them at an angle will keep you from unraveling. (To keep it from coming apart, you can put a drop of white glue on the end of each ribbon and “press” it in with your fingers. Make sure the ribbons don’t stick together as they do. drying !) To use your bookmarks, open the Bible. This will open up a space in the spine between the page block and the cover. Slide the cardboard into this hole. (The Bible must be open, as this gap closes when the book is closed. If you’re having trouble sliding the card in, try opening the Bible a little wider than it is flat – that is, it looks like you’re close. as if trying to “Close” it inside out.) Push the bookmark up to where the ribbons start so that the entire cardboard strip is hidden. (It is only part of this photo.)
Distribute the ribbons between the pages as needed and close the Bible. And there you go!
