How To Make Paper Bowls At Home
As I mentioned before – I’ve been fascinated with paper crafts this year. My frugal nature really sucks when it comes to creating something lovely out of junk mail, catalogs, old books and magazines! I’ve been trying out folding books out of paper, so it’s time to try something fun with magazines and catalogs. They are great as conversation starters, decorations, and can be given as gifts. Since almost everyone has magazines and catalogs around they are (practically) free to do! Here we go with the guide!
Material:
Tape Modge Podge / Glue . magazine pages
Direction:
Step 1: Fold your magazine bars.Remove pages from magazines or catalogs. While you can use any of them, pages with more colors will give your finished product more color.Fold your magazine page in half in the middle.Fold both edges towards the center crease.Fold the new outer edges to the center again. And fold the edges to the center one last time.Read more: How to Make God in a Mini AlchemyFinally, fold it in half down the middle Note: The complete size of your paper “slat” is important. If it is too thick, it will be difficult to roll up and the finished width of the slats itself will affect the look of the bowl. Personally, I think the finished product looks better with a narrower “stick” of paper. You can even cut each page in half clockwise to make the bar thinner and easier to scroll.Tada! A folding wooden stick. Note that by repeatedly folding in the center, you’re removing any rough edges you might have gotten into tearing the pages out of the magazine.Repeat until you have multiple bars. Step 2: Paste the bars.I like to join the bars with tape. You simply pull out a piece of tape, lay it on your surface, then line the two rods you’re joining end to end and wrap the tape around. The combined shot is taped.I like to glue all my bars together before I start scrolling – usually 3 at a time.So you have a big pile of 3 magazine pages long. Step 3: Roll the bars back. This is the part that needs a little coordination & hand strength. I like to do my coils all at once – it’s not the kind of project where you want to stop midway because it’s coming unfinished. If you really need to stop, try securing it with a rubber band (have a rubber band ready before you start!) So just bend the first stick and start rolling. When you get to the end of your bar, stick a new one in and keep scrolling! Read more: how to say blue in RussianI want to make my coil as tight as possible. Once I’ve done a bit of winding, I put my palm down flat on it and “twist” it tighter. . . not really sure how to explain that better. . .Continue doing this until the coil is as big as the diameter you want. Then glue the end of the last stick down to the bowl itself. Step 4: Shape the bowl. Now comes the hard part. You must slowly push the sides of the bowl up. Be careful or you may encounter this:Much booing ensued. Trust me – it’s much harder to roll the bowl once you’ve matched all the bars. Grrr. Here you can see the bowl shaped from the top (this is how I think they look neatest). And here’s from the side. Step 6: Seal the bowl. Now you can cut off any small part of the tape that you can see (using a precision knife). Once all is well, it’s time to seal it. I like to use Modge Podge as a sealant, but you could try watering glue or even some polyurethane.I give each side 2-3 coats of paint. It will take quite a while to dry completely – the paper can absorb the glue a little on the first coat. Are they pretty?!? Now I want to try making a “square” bowl and a long oval bowl.
