How To Make Layered Hair Bows

I have 110 billion things to do around the house – shelves to hang, walls to paint, furniture to overhaul. But sometimes, you just need a small project to make you feel like you’ve finished the whole project in an hour, right? I’ve been wearing bows in Emma’s hair ever since she had hair, but as she got older, her bows got bigger too. I’ll use any excuse to put a bow in her hair. Actually, I don’t really need an excuse. I just do that. Today’s “excuse” is to wear team t-shirts. My son, Zack, is participating in a creativity contest through his school and his team has matching t-shirts to wear. Because my husband Tom and I are coaches, Emma also has a shirt (the team calls her their mascot). I decided to make matching bows for all the girls on the team (plus Emma) to wear on game day. What a great excuse to make four bows! I learned how to make these stacked hair bows from a great set of YouTube videos that make bowing so easy. I’ll show you the steps I took to create this video, and a link to each video I used to make each part. I bought all my ribbons at Jo-Ann.1. BaseI used 36″ 1 1/2″ grosgrain ribbon for the base of the bow and tied it with white thread. Click HERE for a video tutorial for instructions on tying the base of this bow. The Loop de LoopI used about 18-24″ (I forgot to measure) 5/8″ width grosgrain ribbon for the Loop de Loop. It is joined together by hot glue. Click HERE to watch a video tutorial for this section. SqueezeI used about 18 ″ (again, forgot to measure) 7/8 (2 colors) grosgrain ribbon to create the Twist. I secured this with white thread. I glued the Pinwheels to the Base and wrapped white thread around the bow. Then I hot glued the Loop de Loop on top and wound the thread around it. Then I added hot glue to the Twist and wrapped the thread around the bow. Next, you cover an alligator clip with 3/8″ ribbon, hot glue it to the back of the Base, and wrap it up with thread. Click HERE to watch a video showing me how to assemble and wrap the clamp. Once the clip was clamped, I wrapped the 3/8″ ribbon around the bow and clip and hot glued it in place.6. RenovationsI thought the bow looked great, but I decided to add a little decoration. The kids named their team “Candy Dice”, so I thought it would be cute to add a little dice to the bow. I glued one to one of the Twist tails.And that’s it! I think it turned out so cute, completely custom, and VERY CHEAP than buying these bows in the store. To buy my favorite big bows for Emma, just a single Base color, it cost me about $10. When you’re making your own bows, the upfront cost is a lot to buy ribbons, but I made 4 bows from 1 roll of each of these ribbons (except 1 1/2″ – I needed 2 ) and there are still plenty of ribbons left to create different variations in the future for other bows for Emma.Do you make hair bows for your daughter/niece/niece/cousin/friend?
