How To Make An Owl Diaper Cake Step By Step

Make a memorable and unique baby shower gift with this Owl Diaper Cake tutorial!

Hi! Today I thought I would share with you an owl diaper cake that I just made as a gift for a friend’s baby shower. She loves owls so it’s no wonder she made my owl-inspired diaper cake! I looked on Pinterest and found some really cute ideas and lots of little owl diaper cakes, all pretty much the same with little variations! Here are the instructions for my owl diaper cake* Updated: I recently remade this Owl Diaper Cake, this time it needs to be gender neutral as the parents are waiting to find out the gender. I followed the instructions below, but instead of flower clips for the eyes, I used paper medallions. I also made a bow on the front of the owl under its beak. I have some more pictures and notes about this new neutral owl diaper cake at the end of this post Read: how to make owl diaper cake step by stepowl diaper cake

Essential Supplies for DIY Owl Diaper Cake TutorialSTEP ONE: Create Owl Eyes! For the eyes, I used two lavender hairpins included in a girls set. I found it on liquidation at MuaBuyBaby for under $2! To make the eyeballs, I used two white buttons (the kind with a small plastic hole protruding from the back of the button) and found two brass metal pins. You can really use anything as an eye on the button, even a Sharpie! I glued my brass eye to the buttons and then loosely sewed the buttons between the flowers. I don’t want to hot glue those on as it would make the scroll bars unwearable!Step 1. DIY Owl Diaper Cake TutorialSTEP TWO: Roller diapers!I used 5 diapers for each diaper eye. I stack them in a row, overlapping about half a layer. Then I rolled them up tightly and tied them with rubber bands! Accomplished! Read more: how to wear high socks in baseballStep 2. After placing all the diapers on top of each other in the pan, I turned around to try and get them evenly spaced. Then I started pushing them in to make my twist as tight as possible. I had to keep spacing them out once I did this, but in the end, I had a nice tight coil that I tied with an elastic band.

STEP FOURTH: Stacking! To stack, I place the bib on top of the diaper body and then place both eyes on the bib – essentially, I clip the bib between the diaper rolls. I wrapped a ribbon as tightly as possible around the whole thing to keep everything in place. I originally used a very pretty lavender ribbon so I could see my elastics through it. I decided to take a thinner purple ribbon I had and go around the owl again to cover the rubber bands up.Step 4. DIY Diaper Cake TutorialSTEP FIVE: Add the blanket’s wings and ears!Next, I got the owl to stand upright and took the baby blanket (which is beautifully made for little owls) and covered the owl. It took a while… so I decided to make the ears out of the blanket instead of the little socks I had planned. I tied the elastic around the blanket just below the owl’s eyes, lifting the bib up to hide. Then I squeeze the little ears out, trying to keep the wing length equal and the ears as close as possible. I used two paper clips to hold my ears in place.Step 5. I folded a pair of purple baby socks into a triangle and glued it between the owl’s diaper eyes. To get my owl eyes to attach to the diaper, I had to get a little creative. I used the two ends of the piercing and folded them to make a U. Then I glued it to the diaper roll and clipped it on my paper clips. The cute little owl diaper cake is finished!! Yay!Step 6. I took some pictures of the side and back so you can see how I handled the blanket as I didn’t have any pictures of this blanket the first time I did this! Instead of tying the ribbon underneath the bib in the front, I kept the top and tied it into a pretty bow! Also, since the bib I’m using is a bit larger than the one I’ve used before, I used a few extra diapers. For this owl I used 35 size 1 diapers – I bought a pack of size 1 Pampers Pure diapers.owl4adelleowl4adelleFor the eyes, I made two paper medals and then glued a large gray circle over each one. I go through the steps of making a paper medal on this post and you can go to my video and watch the Watermelon Medal Banner video to see how. Using hot glue, I attached one end of the stick to the back of each medal and then when it was dry I just glued the end between two small diaper rolls. Hints work well, but I don’t recommend putting them in and out because the more familiar you are with them, the more likely they are to break.owl5adelleowl5adelleowl6adelleI hope it helps to see a few more pictures of the owl diaper cake. It really makes for the sweetest baby shower gift. It’s small enough to fit in a gift bag and looks adorable sitting on a dresser or in a baby’s room before supplies are needed and it has to be taken out!
