How to make a championship belt
The design inspiration for our Championship belt was one of WWE’s World Heavyweight belts with world flags. The flags chosen for our belts represent the United States, Japan, Great Britain and Canada. We were able to find flags on the Oriental Trading website here.Supplies to craft Champion Ship belts like WWE belts
- 1 sheet of white foam (Oriental Trading)
- Chart
- 2 sheets of gold glitter craft paper
- 1 sheet of silver glitter craft paper
- 2 sheets of red glitter craft paper
- 1 sheet of black craft paper (Oriental Trading)
- Small Flags of All Countries (Eastern Trading)
- Self-adhesive jewelry (Oriental Trading)
- 1 1/2 yards of faux leather fabric
- Sharpie® Gold Marker
- Glue E6000
- Elmer’s® Glue
Model the championship belt buckleOur championship belt starts with creating a prototype. We are working from scratch with our own design. We first used corrugated paper to pattern the main part of the belt which we call the buckle. Any good wrestling or boxing belt has an ornate oversized buckle to show off. Because one sheet of drawing paper wasn’t big enough, we glued several pieces together. Ours buckle is about 7 1/2″ high and 12 1/4″ long.
Be the flag bearer for the championship beltAlso using checkered paper we created rectangles with rounded edges for our flags. Each Flag rectangle is 4 1/4″ high and 3 1/2″ wide.Trace the designs on the foam boardNext, we traced the designs of both the buckle and the rectangles onto the foam board and used a sharp craft knife to make the cuts.
We will now use the cut foam cardstock as our template to trace around the edges on the golden craft paper that will become the front of the belt. Cut out the golden craft paper and set aside.
Color the edges of the foam boardThere is nothing complicated here. One simple tap and you can give your DIY Championship belt a beautifully finished look. Create the letters CHAMPWe ordered letters of the wrong size and made our own so a word of wisdom, be sure of your letter size before ordering! Cricket! Someone please tell Santa to send me a Cricut this year! If you have a Cricut or any cutter, use it for this step! If not, you know drill. My husband hand-drawn the letters, then used them to make cuts in red glitter craft paper. See these 21 Crazy Beginner Cricut Projects
Cut and glue the yellow craft paper onto the cut pieces of foam board. We used the E6000 to attach the gold craft paper but I’m sure Elmer’s will do just fine. The black shapes on either side of the circle are cut from black craft paper, start gluing all the pieces into place as seen above. The flags are attached to a stick for display purposes. We cut the flags from the stick and then cut them down to fit the rectangular pieces. We chose larger pieces of jewelry to make them stand out.
Now for the faux leather fabric and a little seam. Fold the fabric in half. Our finished belt is about 48 inches long. Read more: how to split screen xbox one There are some curves in our belt design but they are quite easy to manipulate while sewing. Cutting notches on the curves as shown will make the fabric flatter. Be careful not to cut the groove too deep. Pin, staple, and pull down the fabric to hold it in place before you start sewing the hem. Lots of pinning will help keep your fabric wrinkle-free. Although the bottom of the belt is where the fabric is folded, I ran a hem along that bottom edge for a nice look. You can see that in the close-up photo below, this faux leather is really thin and doesn’t require another needle in my machine. I was surprised! After sewing the hem around the edge, trim the excess.
We have now glued all of our Champion Belt designs down to the faux leather front using the E6000. Once we had them all glued down, we put the heavy books on top for the drying time. You can easily sew or glue the velcro to the ends to close.
The first to win our new Championships was our handsome grandson Connor after a hectic game of Clue. What board game does your family like to play? Clue is our current favorite but Monopoly is also known to be central. The ability to win the belt inspires all family members to show off for game night. Make some snacks and let the fun begin.
