How To Make A Victorian Ball Gown

Of all the Victorian events I’ve attended, dancing the night away with a live brass band at the Victorian prom is my favourite! Dancing between elegant ladies’ Victorian evening gowns and gentlemen’s ready-to-wear coats was heaven for me. That’s how I got into history in the first place. After attending my first Victorian dance, I spent the next 2 months sewing a new Victorian evening gown to wear. I went to the fabric store, picked out a pattern of evening gowns, fabrics, and ornaments, and dusted my sewing machine. It’s so beautiful! It is unique! It’s the 18th century! – And as it turns out, I didn’t know my history and chose an 18th-century model (Marie Antoinette/Outlander era) over a Victorian evening gown of 1840-1901. Sorry! DIY Victorian Evening Dress – Dress

The trick with any DIY outfit is finding the right outfit in a thrift store to use as your base. In my DIY Victoria Day dress tutorial, I suggest pairing a finished dress with a blouse to create a simple no-sew outfit. You can do the same for evening gowns, but mismatched tops and bottoms aren’t common with evening gowns. For a formal Victorian dress, look for a thrift store dress in the following:

• Shoulder or shoulder. Short sleeve or long sleeve is ok.
• Fitted at the waist.
• Full skirt (biggest you can find to fit busts or large petticoats).
• Solid color (preferably pearl and pastel tones).
• There are laces, laces, and more laces. Old wedding gowns are great. Taffeta, velvet, cotton, brocade, silk and satin are also good. Avoid tulle/mesh and metal.
• 1980s prom dresses.
• A simple Victorian inspired dress (just the decor).
• A cheap Southern Belle Halloween costume – these can be good or redecorated into something unique to you.

My recent trip to the thrift store left me with few outfit choices (it was Halloween and all the pretty dresses were out). However, I managed to find a black velvet dress, a ’90s satin evening gown, and a red peasant dress. I choose each one because the skirt is full and low or has no straps. I also have an ’80s evening gown in my closet just waiting for this day. The only problem with it is that it has sleeves (most evening dresses don’t) and it’s too short (knee length instead of floor length). For the basic Victorian evening gown above, I stacked an ’80s prom dress on top of another Victorian dress I already have. You can use any full dress you can find at the thrift store. You can also find another prom or wedding dress with a split top and cut off only the bottom of the skirt. A white Victorian petticoat would also be fine. And if all else fails, sew a simple dress. Don’t worry about color matching. The best Victorian dresses I’ve ever seen feature wild color combinations. Tea tree and blue? Orange and purple? Red and yellow? You will be surprised at what looks great together.Skirt or petticoat adds significant volume to the Victorian silhouette. The largest bangle was worn during the Civil War while the late Victorian era was reduced to an A-line with just one or two light petticoats underneath. Older wedding dresses often come with hemlines or ruffles to create float. I bought a cheap bangle on Amazon for these pictures. It’s 120 inches wide, which is huge. Some of my dresses/skirts didn’t fit it, so I narrowed the loop by cutting the string and gluing the back together smaller. It’s still too long for my 5’3 height, so in the future I’ll need to take it off completely. Lace trims, large belts and bows, and flowers (real or fake) were common details added to Victorian evening gowns. I went through some old pictures and illustrations, then rummaged through my decor to see what I had to do. Here are some of the choices I made: As you can see above, a little trimming can take a dress from simple to elegant. A long, wide satin ribbon (which can also be used to tie a blanket) can become a belt, belt, or large bow around the waist. A scrap of wide lace can be gathered and pinned to the inside of the sleeve or along the neckline. I even found a lace window curtain that, when wrapped around the bodice like a shawl, transformed the dress into a romantic Victorian gown. Another option is to tie a light lace shawl around your neck or shoulders. If you want to sew or use a glue gun, you can contour the bottom skirt with ribbon, ribbon, or lace. For a mini skirt, try grouping it into pretty dresses – one, two, three or all around. Accentuate with flowers or bows and you’ve got yourself another easy evening gown.

Well, this black velvet cape is still good, but I added lace belts in one picture and lace window curtains around the neckline in another. Both are simple and effective. The peasant red dress works best when draped over a black velvet dress. I gathered the skirt on both sides and added a wide black beaded belt shaped like a Victorian Medici belt. In the second photo, I added a short velvet jacket (bolero jacket would be better) to show you that you don’t have to have bare arms to go to a Victorian prom. This day-to-night look reminds me of a pub girl or a spanish girl. I turned a newer satin evening gown into a Victorian-inspired evening gown. I love floral embroideries on dres, so I found a pink scarf to match and used it as a neckline. In the second image, I used a piece of stretchy scrap lace as the neckline. The original dress had a layered skirt section that I wasn’t too freaked out about, so I pushed it aside and put some layered flowers down at the wedding. Now that I think about it, I could have dropped my skirt and put flowers along the edge. That would also look great. Play, play, play until you find a style you love!
