How To Make A Skateboard Turn Easier

One of the worst things about buying new trucks is making them turn right. Once you’ve figured out a truck shape you like (they’re all slightly different and you’ll have to try a few), the next thing to do is tweak them. Everyone is different. If you’re lucky, you can grab your favorite trucks, hop on and go. However, if you prefer your truck to be looser or tighter, there are a few things you can do to get it set up properly. Today we’re going to take a look at a few bushings (possibly the most technically correct term?) also known correctly as suspension cushions. There is a top one and a bottom one. The top is almost always conical, the bottom is usually a barrel or a slightly taller cone. The stock cushion in most trucks is decent, but not suitable for all skaters. The first question you should answer is do you prefer a loose truck for carving and turning or a tighter truck for more stable straight-line riding? It’s possible (and most likely) you’re somewhere in between. As a general rule, you can use the following as a bit of a guide to get the best mattresses for your setup. LOSS TRUCK – Extra soft to soft bushing – Durometer 75a to 90a

MEDIUM TRUCK – Soft to medium bushing – durometer 90a – 95a

TIGHT TRUCKS – Medium to hard bushing – Durometer 95a to 101a

The reason you should choose the right bushing or bushing hardness is that they perform better. And last longer! If you ride tight trucks and use soft bushings, you’ll notice they bulge. This can cause them to split or get cut by the edges of the dishwasher. When you’re upgrading your truck with aftermarket bushings (or a brand new truck), you’ll often find hangers after spinning. Not a big problem. But people usually take their board to the skate shop to get this fixed. The good thing to do is to apply a layer of grease, oil, WD40 or dry lubricant to the upper and lower flat surfaces of the bushing. This just helps the hanger ‘slide’ back into its proper place. If you ride your truck for a bit, they will ‘break in’ and it will probably get out on its own pretty quickly. Besides, when you stand on your deck, your weight puts even pressure on all four wheels.
