I’ve always loved mermaids, and I guess that love soothed my little daughter because she loved them too. So she’s really happy to see some of her favorite handmade dolls equipped with some new fins! These mermaid tails are really quick and easy. They have an elasticated waist so little ones can easily get on and off the doll, and the fins are tied with a cute little knot.
So grab some fabric and sewing supplies and let’s sew some mermaid tails for all your little dolls!
How big do you want to sew a mermaid tail for the doll? Great! Let me show you how…
You will need….
- Fabric, quantity depends on your doll size, but 1/2 yard should be plenty. This is also a great project to raid your trash!
- 1/4″ or 3/8″ stretch, enough to go around your doll’s waist.
- The doll you want to make a mermaid tail so you can take her measurements
- Basic sewing supplies.
- Paper and pencil to draw your fin pattern
Start by taking the doll’s measurements – you’ll need to measure the doll’s waist where you want the tail to sit and the doll’s length from where you want the tail to sit to the tip of your toes. Take your waist measurement and add 4″ to that number for ease and to allow for seams (for my doll, 9″ + 4″ = 13″). Then divide that number by 4 (so, 13 / 4 = 3 1/4 ″). Draw a long line across the top of your paper. Next, add 2″ to your length measurement (for my doll, 12″ + 2″ = 14″), draw a length line down the left side of your first. row. Then draw a 1 line at the bottom. Complete your tail pattern by drawing your mermaid tail on the right side. My doll has skinny legs so I drew them straight down at the top and curved in to meet my 1″ line, if your doll has larger legs or large feet you may want to spread out a little. slightly before curving in to meet the bottom line. Start with a 1 line to match the bottom of the tail. Then draw a line perpendicular to it the length of your fin (I made both of my mermaid fins the same size, 7″, I probably won’t be any smaller than that, but you have May wish they were a little bigger to be larger than the size doll). Then draw a curved line for the fins on top.
