In most men’s belts, the holes are spaced a perfect inch apart, making your job easy. Simply use the ruler to establish a straight horizontal edge by making sure it crosses each hole at the same point and marks on the back.

Option #1: Make a hole with a tarp (or nail)
If you have at least one medium equipped toolbox, you will definitely have a hammer or mallet. And you can have an awl, which is (basically) a metal point with a handle. It is similar to an ice pick, which you can easily use. If you don’t have an awl, get one! They cost $2.00 and you’ll find them used in all sorts of furniture, paper, leather, and fabric. Or, try a large nail.
Not much for that: Mark your spot and place your belt on a piece of scrap wood. Use short firm strokes to slowly insert the pointed tip into the material, pushing it all the way through until you’ve reached a thickness of metal that corresponds to your hole size. That’s another argument for the nail awl, since the tool is tapered evenly along its length.
Option #2: Use an electric drill to add holes
If you take your time and start the hole well, you can drill through the skin with pretty obvious results. your drill bits until you choose the right drill bit. You will have the best results if you can start the hole clean. If you have brad point bits, you’ll definitely want to choose them over metal mining bits. If not, make a substantial dimple where you want it with a nail or sharp knife and use it to keep it in place.
Option #3: Use Leather Perforations

If your belt has ovals or oblong holes, I guess you can use this tool to create two rounded corners and then cut off the middle with a craft knife. But even I am not so obsessed.
