How to Make an Arch Swag! May 24, 2021 1 Comment Large splashes of flowers and greenery are all the rage for both weddings and striking wall decor (think overlays!). They may seem rather daunting because of their size and the sheer amount of greenery/flowers in them but here are some tips and tricks to create your perfect piece for display!

What you need:

This is what I used for this project:

• Craft foam
• Chicken wire
• Wire cutters (for cutting chicken wire and plants/flowers)
• Winding
• Green plants / sub
• Sola wood flower in Oh You’re Lovely

Hold tight around the foam!

This part can get a little uncomfortable, so if you have some gardening gloves, that will help keep your hands from chicken wire spots! First, you’ll want to wrap the chicken wire around your foam block so you know what size you’ll need. Don’t worry about further protrusions at the ends of the foam sheet as this will be covered with greenery and flowers and help keep them in place! Once you know how much chicken wire you will need to wrap the foam, cut the chicken wire to size and secure it together with twine.

Prepare your greenery!

With your chicken wire/foam base ready, it’s time to prep your plants! I usually like to use a big green for the background and ficus is perfect for that. Since we had a large area to start with, the preparation was pretty easy. Simply cut the ficus into 3 smaller pieces.

Create boundaries!

It is important to delve into these arrangements with shape in mind. I wanted this to transform into something like a diamond, so to start I created the top and bottom “boundaries” and side by side. This helps guide me into the shape (when I’m sure I get more and just keep adding and adding things to the piece!).

Fill to create diamond shape!

I continued creating our shape by adding ficus pieces along the edges of the foam block. Once the loose diamond shape was clear, I started adding ficus to the foam block from the top, sides and all corners. Interlacing the trunk’s entry point creates a mesh pattern inside the foam that helps keep everything in place. Fun fact – you don’t actually have to use glue to hold your greens in place if you use this method!

Add different greenery!

Read more: how to catch cheating iphoneNow that we have a nice green base, it’s time to add some variation for interest. I grabbed the seed eucalyptus because its leaves are darker and the seeds are dark pink to accentuate! Again, I simply cut the seeded eucalyptus bundles into smaller pieces and added them directly to the chicken wire foam block.

Spray Paint for Metal Filler!

Metallics were really popular and my favorite part about them? You can turn any fake filler into a beautiful accent! I used Design Master rose gold spray paint to make them the perfect filler!

More Shinies!

Once the rose gold spray has dried (it actually only takes about an hour to dry completely if using Design Master), cut those twigs to size and add them to your puzzle piece. !

Find the foam!

These wall panels or arches have lots of greenery and fillers. It’s actually quite impressive how much a block of foam can hold! Our next step is to completely cover any foam that is still visible. If you don’t want to use more plants or potting medium, you can cover with moss. One thing to keep in mind is that we still have to add flowers, so if you decide to use moss to cover the exposed styrofoam, you don’t want to cover the glue completely. Otherwise, you won’t have any room for your flower spikes to stab and cling to the foam.

Cover the foam!

To cover the bare areas, I clipped more eucalyptus and eucalyptus seeds and kept adding it until everything looked like everything had solid coverage.

Draw and arrange your flowers!

Read more: How to ask a cross-functional team about the crm systemI used different types of woody flowers (top left – sugar and spices/garden roses, top right – rustic flowers, bottom right – ruffled / lovely peonies, bottom left – sophia) but kept similarly shaped ones of the same color. For this piece I wanted to use ivory, burgundy and two pinks, so I found the shades I wanted in craft acrylic paint, mixed them with water and a bit of vegetable glycerin and Start dyeing them all! To ensure that the work looks natural and has good flow, you should make sure you have multiple sizes with different colors! Once the flower has dried, dab a little hot glue on the back and add to your 18 gauge stem.

More big flowers!

Time to add flowers! First, I added to each color the three largest flowers (3 ″). I keep them mostly in the middle area but also try not to have them all concentrated in the center of the bullseye. We wanted the flow to look natural and not forced, so keeping some space for some of the smaller flowers to fill in will help preserve that airiness.

Add medium flowers!

Next, I added 3-5 medium flowers (2.5″) to each color! Again, I mostly kept them around the central part with the large flowers but sprinkled some on the outer areas.

Add the little flowers!

Finally, it’s time to add our own 1″ -1.5″ flowers! As you can see, many of them have reached the edges of our diamond shape but others are scattered in the center and throughout the entire land.

Finish with Filler!

To finish the cake, I added the dried breaths of the baby. It helped give the final textured look as well as spread the ivory through the piece. Our final step is to hang the work and there are several ways to do that. If you’re going to put it on the wall in your house, you can either use a command hook and hold it from the chicken wire in the back, or you can hammer two nails into the wall and stick the foam pad directly onto those nails. If you’re using it for a decorative arch at an event, you can use zip ties to secure it around a wooden or metal pole.
