How To Make A Draw Knife

I never owned one and realized I really didn’t need one, but thinking back, there were many times when I could have used a cutlery. Situations where I use a block plane, electric plane, or belt grinder to knock down or shape almost a piece can happen much faster with this tool. I’ve been asked a few times if I can build one and this project has been on my list for quite some time, so given that it’s warm here now, I’ll take it out. outdoors and complete this project. The first thing I do is research online to look at different designs for cutlery, to get an idea of how to make knives. Of the ones I’ve seen, I like the handle to be angled, figuring this would keep my hand in the most natural position. Meaning if you are going to use it for an extended session, it should be as comfortable as possible. I marked the basic shape on the blade body, fitting it in as best I could. I regret not getting one of the larger (probably 20 inch diameter) ones that they use on the block saw. After cutting it out, I marked and roughened the chamfer for the blade. I thought a lot about how to keep the handles on, but decided on a very simple solution that starts by cutting part of the way into the tang to create two tabs:Read more: how to bend wood without breaking The steel the blade is made of has been hardened and tempered to the right level to hold an edge, so I really don’t need to do this . When working with hardened steel, just be careful not to overheat and it will retain that hardness. I like if a tool looks like it’s been used and ready to use, not in show condition:To attach the handle to the blade, I cut notches on the saw table the same thickness as the tang. After the tang was glued in, I was able to fill the rest of the slot. Another way is to drill a groove through each handle, but that can take longer and is less neat. The gap also makes it easier for the drum to be fully glued. With the cutting groove, it is a bit more difficult to install it on the lathe. After the blank was turned on, I split it into two handles and quickly rotated them. Nothing fancy, just a fatter base shape at the end:Now for those tabs at the end of the tang. I heated them up and bent them in opposite directions, then reheated and burned it to the end of the handle:This puts the metal down flat with the end and looks pretty neat too:Epoxy is used to seal clear drums and also as a thin filler to close joints: Read more: How to read a cleaning eggThe excess wood is cut off after the epoxy cures:Originally, I was going to use a short piece of copper for the iron, but thought I would try an idea of using copper wire instead. It was hard to wrap it tightly and just enough with the pre-installed handle, so if I did it again, I would change that.To bring out the color and grain of the wood, and to protect it, I applied two coats of linseed oil. After it dries, I try the knife for the first time:It works well and feels very natural to use.
