When we first adopted Yuki, she ran out of the backyard a few times. Second, I want her to have plenty of room to run, but can’t reach the fence, so I need a long thin space, not a circular space. Ultimately, I want to minimize the chance of her wrapping the cable around herself or anything else. She feels like restricting her freedom makes her more likely to find ways to escape. She needed a way to give her puppy some space to run safely. I suggested building a cable that runs like Zuki’s, which is what prompted me to put all the details together in this post.

Necessary parts and tools

From Lowe’s, Home Depot or your local Hardware Store

• galvanized steel cable like this (not sure if this is the exact size we used, but it is similar)
• some (we used five) of these are called leash clamps
• two of these messes
• two eye bolt screws big enough for slick things to get through
• a convenient little rotating pulley

From the pet store

• vinyl coated lanyard with clips on both ends
• martingale collar (limited slip)

What to do with all those parts

Decide on two places to place the ends of the running cable. I chose to attach one end to my back door frame and the other to a tree in the middle of the yard. Make sure the cable doesn’t run too close to the fence or anything else your dog can jump over. You don’t want them to jump over something while on the rope and end up hanging themselves!

Screw the eyebolt screws in at each end, preferably at a 90 degree angle to the end of the cable. Make sure you place them high enough that you don’t have to get under the cables as you walk across the yard. Note that the cable WILL have some sag in the middle.

Put something easy through an eye bolt screw and thread your steel cable through it.

Use two of the leash clamps here – one to secure cables and entrapments and a second to keep the end of the cable in place. What you will have so far will look something like this:

Consider whether you need to prevent your dog from accessing either end of the cable. If so, you’ll need to put extra leash clips on the cable. (I don’t need one on one end of the house, but I did put one about 20 feet from the tree at the other end.) Slide any necessary clamps on the cable now, along with the pulley. Make sure you slide them in the correct order so that the pulley can run the full length of the cable between any necessary sections.

Thread the second thing through the second eye bolt screw and thread the cable through it. Use the two clamps to secure the cable like you did on the other end. This end is more difficult, as you must pull the cable as tight as possible before screwing the clips in. We don’t use any special tools for this – just bare hands – and we just sag a little. If our cable is longer than 100 feet, I think we will need a fence puller to make it nice and tight.

If you’re using clips to prevent your dog from reaching one or both ends of the cable, tighten them now. I used one to stop Zuki from wrapping her lanyard around the tree in the distance.

Clip one end of the tether to the swing pulley.

Clip the other end of the lanyard to the martingale collar. Personally, I keep the collar hanging on the inside doorknob of my back door. I put a scarf around Zuki’s neck before I opened the door. When she comes back, I close the door (it will close with the cable running under it) before I pull the collar off.

Note about collars: Never use a collar to tie a dog. However, if you do all this work and then use a regular buckle collar, your dog may pull away from the collar and disappear. This is why I use martingale collars. Martingales should not be left 24/7 or left a dog unattended. They are used while walking. Make sure the martingale is the right size. It should be tight enough that your dog cannot back away from it, but not so tight that it endangers the dog. Zuki wears a necklace with a lock 24/7 with her ID tag and the Tagg Pet Tracker on it. Martingale only happens when she’s outside, supervised, on her cableway, or when we’re out for a walk.

Get to know your dog

Depending on your dog’s temperament, don’t be surprised if their first run makes them feel a little uncomfortable. Zuki is afraid of the sound the pulley makes as it hums along the cable. She’ll pull, it’ll squeak, she’ll sit down and look panicked. For about the first week, we had to hang out with her and walk to move the pulley by hand. If she was out there alone, she would stay home and try not to move the pulley. Suddenly, one day, she just received it. Of course, right after that, she was chasing a squirrel and hitting the clip near the end REALLY hard. Oh! However, it didn’t take her long to figure out her range. Now she runs up and down as fast as she wants and – often – slows down before finishing. ~~ UPDATE Jan 2014 ~~ We found a “weak link” in this system… last weekend I was observing Zuki in the yard and suddenly realized she was outside the section yard that she can reach! Luckily, she learned a pretty good way of recalling (when I was shaking a bag of snacks), so I brought her back before she realized she was free to jump across the line. fence.
